My FIL is having a weird problem where 4K content from the FireTV 4K he has, in the past week or so, results in a black screen, with the audio track playing in the background.  His FireTV version is 5.2.7.8

He mentioned a possible Android TV update that happened around the same time.

Anyone heard or seen anything?

Android TV and Fire TV are completely different beasts.

Having said that, Fire TV has received an update (some as recently today, like mine) or earlier for some with a new UI. Make sure your FIL check for updates and restart the box. I've found the Fire TV Cube to be very prone to memory leaks and then having problems with playback for some apps (mainly Plex and Pluto).

I understand. He has both. His Sony TV got an update last week as well. I provided that information in case it may prove to be relevant.

Yeah my Fire Stick has it, I don't think his 2nd gen 4K Fire TV will be getting it. He checked it with me a couple of hours ago. he has restarted his box. I am going to suggest a full power cycle of all his equipment again, including amp and tv, and whatnot, but was just jumping the shark as I don't think that will help.

He has the latest as of that list.

They are rolling out the UI update to the Firestick 4k. Mine haven't received it yet.

There is a 2021 stick which I'll be ordering as soon as it's released. Unfortunately they aren't shipping direct to NZ and I don't really have any faith in youshop any more.

My 4K stick got the update yesterday. I've already been using it on the 3rd Gen Pendant model. Takes a little bit of getting used to.

Just wish Netflix did frame rate matching on FireTV.

Also interesting to see that over in OZ they're offering the Android TV versions of the local services as part of the recently refreshed FireSticks. It would be great if they could also add the NZ Apps.

I've still go one of the  original  Fire TV boxes not the Fire Stick and haven't got any update yet.  I suspect It maybe too old for the update.

Thanx for the link.  Yep 1st Gen Fire TV.  As long as it keeps working I'll still use it as is.

Right. After using the new user interface design for a while now - who agrees with me it's just absolutely crap? Hard to find things, my recently watched programs/series is not there anymore, if you stop watching a movie halfway through and want to come back you have to search for it again, the apps on top of the screen don't help much, it's an absolute mess.

After less than extensive usage i.e. twice, so far I tend to agree. Still, it appears to be prettier, and that seems to be the main thing. Form wins over function, again.

Has anyone noticed that over time the location of the standby option has changed twice? Used to be the first (default) option when holding down the button, then they shifted it across one to the right, and now with this latest OS it’s across two. A small change, for sure, but not one designed to improve UX (the kids often turn off the tv before the Fire, so used to putting it in standby without seeing what I’m doing).
