I'm posting this 4 days after the announcement. So not much enthusiasm for this?

http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/CU1209/S00212/quickflix-announces-content-providers.htm

Perhaps because it looks like the new content is pay-per-view. But at $6 a pop if the family only watches 3 movies a month then it's still cheaper than Sky Movies.

(I'm still posting about Quickflix in off-topic as it appears that only well-established NZ broadcast mediacorps with PVRs get their own forum)

compost: So not much enthusiasm for this?

Or just that I only found out about it now when you posted it!

Moved to correct forum as this is nothing related to the original one.

As per the content, why not post in the other thread about the service?

Is there one? There's a "Quickflix coming soon" or something to that effect (which is now closed) and some variations like assistance with iPod and PS3 support, but there doesn't seem to actually be a "generic" thread.

Edit: Reworded.

Yes... Quickflix coming to NZ.

With 35+ pages, any post there will immediately attract more attention than a new discussion. The thread has turned into a discussion of all things happening with Quickflix.

And yes, I received the press releases. Twice.

don't know if this will be in NZ or just Ozzie, but sounds like what you are looking for, and launching very soon by the sound of things

"Kogan has partnered with movie subscription service Quickflix to deliver streaming entertainment to any TV using a new affordable wireless device. The new Kogan Agora HDMI Wi-Fi dongle can turn any TV with an HDMI input into a smart TV.And the small device will also come pre-loaded with the Android operating system – including the Quickflix app - and the wireless connection necessary to stream movies, TV shows and access the internet."

+1

They have been saying a Samsung Smart TV app has been on its way for the last five months or so. Still nothing.

I gave them 5 months of subs, hardly watched anything because, 1) there was nothing really new to watch that I hadn't already seen, 2) The quality was pretty bad. I couldn't get the Silverlight video to play smoothly without any judder. It was only barely matching DVD quality.

If I want to watch a new release movie, I'd rather pay $3 for a Blu-ray, not $6.99 for sub Blu-ray quality.

It's a shame, because I really wanted to utilise and support QuickFlix a lot more than I did.

I fully understand they're up against the wall when it comes to securing recent content, but they have to do better than they are currently to get my business back.

Pay per Play? They've failed already. I am heartily sick of all the sub-par options that we get slammed on us to stop us whining about how we don't have options like Netflix or Hulu here. Americans have Netflix which has all you can eat (no additional charges - for ANYTHING) content from a vast library of mid-range to older stock, plus a smaller selection of new content - and TV series! Quikflix has... old stuff and a heap of $7 a pop mid-range to newer stuff. Sorry, but that sucks - almost as underwhelming as iSky. And don't even get me started on how abysmal our TV catch up options are compared to Hulu Plus. There's no reason we should be waiting months upon months to pay $7 to watch a single movie for 24 hours.

I'm not quite as pessimistic as you are.
It's early days for them, having only launched around march this year. I can't imagine they have more than 10,000 customers at this point.

Netflix has had streaming for at least 5 years, and has built up something like 20m customers, so it's not surprising they have a bigger catalog.  And if you check out the catalog netflix has in the UK you will notice it is vastly smaller than the USA one.

I remember when quickflix launched they had only about ten tv shows and around 300 movies on the subscription service.
they now have at least ten times as many tv shows as back then, a great kids section, and a lot more movies. (they need to show the non-kids TV stuff separate though. it;s nnoying going through all the kids stuff looking for grown up programs)

give them another year or so and who knows what their catalog will look like? as they grow they will be able to get more money to get more content.

they have a a fair few newer movies in the pay per play thing too - like American Pie Reunion, 21 Jump Street, Contraband, Girls with Dragon tattoo, and Battleship, and judging by the announcement form this thread, will be adding a lot more soon.

Note that because Netflix doesn't do pay per play, it means they cannot ever get blockbuster movies that have only just been released on DVD because the studios will only let them go out on a pay per view basis, not subscription.  They need to wait at least a year, usually longer.  The newest 'big' movie recently added to Netflix is Captain America, which was release at the cinema mid 2011, and most good movies take a lot longer to arrive.
Have a look on Netflix.  You'll notice that none of the movies I mentioned above are available on Netflix yet, and won't be for some time.  So please don't get the idea that by putting something on PPP Quickflix are denying it from subscription, because they aren't. If the studios only want their movie on PPP, then Netflix will not be able to get it.

I use Netflix...a lot.. and the subscription part is definitely better than Quickflix no doubt, but I also try and have realistic expectations of what a NZ/OZ based service, that has been going for less than a year, will provide compared to a multi-billion dollar american company.

Yes, but a year ago I looked at the content and went "Not worth paying for yet"; yesterday I looked at the content and thought the same thing. I'm not paying for a service that doesn't meet my needs and it appears I'm in the majority. They get more content, similar to Aust QuickFlix, then I sign up.

I don't think these streaming services really need blockbusters. If I want to watch the Avengers I want to watch it on BluRay, not some SD stream. What I want to watch is old TV series like Magnum PI, Tour of Duty, China Beach and Babylon 5. This stuff was filmed in SD, or less, and I fail to see how it is too expensive for a service like this to buy, it's old. Yeah, I know not everybody wants to watch the stuff I do but there is heaps of old TV out there, everybody has a few old series they would love to see again. It's not about the latest TV show, leave GoT to SoHo. It's about having a massive selection of old stuff so people can watch stuff they at an attractive price when the only other option is iTunes which is expensive, Bab 5 is $40 per season and the discs if you can find them are similar.

I think QuickFlix needs to have realistic expectations, don't expect us to pay for a substandard service.

They should also do as Telstra does and keep an eye on here.

as far as I can see literally the only difference betwen QFAU and QFNZ ius the HBO back catalogue stuff

I agree that they don't need premium stuff. I was responding to someone else who seemed to think Netflix has newer stuff and quickflix have failed by offering that stuff pay per view when this isn't the case. QF has stuff on PPV that isn't available on Netflix

even excluding the kids stuff,  QF have grown from having 10 seasons of TV at launch to having around 80-90 at a rough count around 6 months later. it takes time to negotiate with studios so I think the future is looking pretty good for them.

Yes It's all british stuff at the moment - but it's all good british stuff (jonathan creek, gavin and stacey, fawlty towers, doctor who, primeval, andromeda, robin hood etc etc.). I've watched quite a few shows and still have heaps to get through before I 'run out; of things I want to watch,

I'd like to see things like 24, breaking bad, etc on there, and hopefully they will start adding those too.

I looked on iSky and some of the british stuff (likle fawlty towers) is available for rental on there for $25-30 per season with 1 month to watch it.
Compared to that Quickflix is incredibly good value, and isn't restcited to a web browser.

iTunes doesn't have ANY TV stuff on it at all so compares extremely unfavourably to QF
and it's PPV movies are $7.99 whereas QF is $6.99 for the same films.

Comparing it to Netflix you might think it is substandard, but compared to what else is available in the market I think it is extremely good, and only getting better.

Yeah, but that is a very big difference, a lot of the best TV in ages is HBO.

I'd really like QF to succeed. You are right that the British stuff is good but if we take Dr Who as an example, there is Season 1 of the new stuff and I think a special. Where is the rest, including the original series? Where is Prime Suspect or Morse or Fresh/French Fields or Only Fools and Horses or .... and you'll note I'm not asking for the new stuff like Sherlock. The back catalogue of old stuff is huge.

The idea of QF is great and I don't think comparisons to NetFlix are that useful but when Sky launched in the 90's they did so with a content selection that was far better than anything else available for the price. QF is in a much harder market.

The sad fact is that today QF are in a market with people who use VPNs to stream NetFlix and others who download illegally. In this market is simply isn't good enough to say: "Well, that's all we have, sorry. Maybe more later".

They have to have content and it has to be easy. They have a way to go on both fronts.

As a regular user of Netflix, sometimes Amazon Instant Video and the occasional Vudu movie, I only do this because I have a 150GB plan from TCL (though that gets stretched at times).

If streaming services locally can't find a way to mitigate against data caps, then streaming will never gain broad acceptance as a way to consume content.

I must admit I was sceptical about streaming HD content with high quality audio (like DD+) versus renting a BD title, but having watched a few now on Vudu at 1080P and DD+ audio,  with little or no buffering, it's a very viable alternative to driving out to the video store and finding the title you want to watch is rented out!
