I'm thinking of buying Apple TV 3 so I can watch Netflix & Hulu, like my Ipad...

Is it setup like Ipad by downloading apps or is Hulu & Netflix builtin to Apple tv Ios, if so do I need to trick it to US setup Ios.

Any help be appreciated...

Hi in order to see the Netflix and Hulu apps you need to have a USA iTunes account.

Then you need to have a VPN or similar service (Unblock-us, unotelly, etc) running on either the Apple TV itself, or on the router which the Apple TV connects to.

Once that's up and running, plus once your computer or whatever you use to access the Internet is also using the above service, you can go to the respective web sites and set up an account. Both of them accept NZ issued credit cards as payment methods - in some cases you may have to make up a USA address and use a ZIP code which has a combination of the digits in your existing NZ post code.

Or, if you have US iTunes gift cards, or even a US credit card or debit card, you can create the accounts through the apps on Apple TV and the cost is billed to that each month.

Sing out if you need any further help! There are many guides on the Internet already about using VPN services to access what you want so look there as well. I have the same setup at home using an Apple TV and a Roku 3 so if you get stuck just ask!

Sorry just to clarify a couple things:

- the apps aren't available if you're using a NZ iTunes account, they show up automatically using a US one.
- rather than make up and address, you *may* need to find an address in the USA whose ZIP code already uses a combination of your existing post code.

I use Unblock-us, they have very good support articles on their site.

Not quite sure what you mean? If you mean if you can use the TVNZ app alongside the Hulu and Netflix apps on your iPad then yes you can do that, you don't need to switch accounts.

You don't actually need a US iTunes account to use Netflix / Hulu on the Apple TV. In the Apple TV settings you only need to set the country to USA to make those apps appear but there is no requirement to provide login details for an iTunes account.

Confirmed. I set my locale to USA, and the US centric apps then appear. Can then login with my usual NZ iTunes account and everything works fine. The just need to use unblock.us DNS entries in the network config and Netflix and Hulu then work perfectly. Have been using this for several months.

Ah my apologies then I mistakenly believed it was based on having a US iTunes account rather than by setting the locale.

I'm thinking this would not work with a VPN as all traffic including iTunes access would be sent to the US where as a DNS service will send hulu/netflix to the US but iTunes would still be local?? I could be wrong
