Click2Flash is seemingly forced to 720p now too.

From NetSafe

In short then if you are downloading videos from YouTube you may very well be breaking copyright law in NZ or the US (unless the site provides a Download link or the content is available under a Creative Commons licence that permits copying/reuse).

I made my own youtube downloader, it's designed for collecting music videos but can work with any videos, you can PM me for url.  It monitors clipboard for youtube urls, and can also plugin to themusicdb.com's database and last.fm to auto download music videos based on your existing collection.

Techincally when you watch a youtube video you are "downloading" it as the file is stored in your browsers cache, downloading the video to my PC for me is a way to save bandwidth and watch offline / at my own leisure.

Anyway... regarding the inability to download 1080p anymore, I've found this explanation:

https://github.com/YePpHa/YouTubeCenter/issues/98#issuecomment-26488263

This is because YouTube are limiting the availability of the qualities for non-Dash formats. So you will have to enable Dash Playback to actually get those qualities. I am looking into a way to merge the Dash formats with the non-Dash formats so you will be able to watch it anyways, but it will be hard because Dash formats are split into two files one for audio and one for the video. Closing this because there's not much I can do about it at the moment. But I will try to fix it when I find a solution.

it would only be illegal if you are downloading copyrighted material, which most of youtube isn't.

you are breaching youtube's Ts and Cs though, which is a civil matter rather than being illegal (much like breaching Netflix's Ts and Cs by watching it from NZ)

I for one enjoy watching videos (in a series) on my train commutes

being able to download them makes it so much easier, no way I want to stream over my 3G limited date plan

Yes I know Youtube is introducing an offline caching mode soon, and I look forward to trying it. If it works anything as well as Spotify's does, I will certainly make use of it.

Regardless, I have never downloaded 1080 quality - usually 480 which is fine for my phone.

At home I watch it streaming on TV through PS3 at 1080 (no choice to reduce quality in fact)

greetings and hello readers,
pleased to find this group with users having the same problemo. I thought i was the only one wanting to download 1080p. I also prefer this than slow live streaming which usually has terrible playback.

how can all that be against copyright when i upload my own stuff for youtube to offer anyone in 1080p yet they want to block that. They never asked me my terms and conditions. all a bit miserable of them who ever it is, youtube, firefox or google. done, now a fix.

This seems to work for me, although I've only used it for downloading game replays.

1 - download a windows version of ffmpeg and unpack it into a folder somewhere, doesn't particularly matter where. Sorry, noob, can't post links, google will find it. Doesn't need installing, you just need the .exe file to exist.

2 - the firefox extension I'm using is "Youtube Video and Audio Downloader" by InBasic, current version 0.3.1.  In the extension options tell it where ffmpeg.exe is located. The option to download an audio track if video only is selected should already be ticked, if not tick it now. Also tell it where to save things, or to ask.

3 - it will put an orange "download" button under the videos you watch on youtube. Clicking the button will bring up a sidebar with loads of different download options, choose the "1080p video only" file, the audio file will get downloaded as well then when they are both downloaded ffmpeg will pop up a command window and do some magix and you are left with (as far as I can see) a normal 1080p video with sound.

Hope that helps
G.
