So since being on UFB noticed data usage has gone up quite a bit and putting most of it down to Netflix now streaming at a higher HD rate due to my increased internet speeds.

But most of the time kids are watching cartoons so dont really need HD. On the web version of Netflix ive just changed playback setting to medium, down from high under account settings.

My question is does this also limit data usage on connected devices, not just watching over web browser. My kids are mainly watching on a WDTV unit and I cant see any way to change settings on that device.

It would be hard to walk away from HD once you've had it!

I would say it does because when you changed the settings , it tells you approximate bandwidth per hour, well not limit just slows it down :)

Yes it does

I set the Netflix website streaming setting quality up or down depending on what I am watching (1080p only for certain movies) and it will change on my TV via PS3 app.
May take a few minutes for the new stream quality to come through

Netflix seem to have 3 quality settings:

Best - 1080p (or up to whatever content is supported at)

Good - 480p

Fair - 380p? - have never used this one

When I have played with the quality settings you loose 5.1 audio if you drop of the highest quality. Might be important to some.

Ours has gone up too, just bought a 100gb pack, so with 200gb plus all you can eat youtube, hopefully that is enough. Averaging 3-5gb per day watching a few tv episodes, up to about 12gb for a few movies. Given the increase in quality, I'm happy to pay Snap the extra $15

Nope - there is a lot more granularity - you can see it from the PS3 App if you push select while a vid is playing:

I have seen 240, 320, 480, 720, 1080.

As for limiting it - I have never seen a device side setting on anything other than the Web App.
