Hi there am I missing something or does the content on Quickflix seem a bit light? It promised HBO content. So where is Game of Thrones? Californication or Dirty Sexy Money?

Quickflix content is in my opinion terrible. It's not their fault and I take my hat off to them for giving it a go, it's the usual rights holders BS holding them back. Sky TV currently have the rights to Game of Thrones and a lot of other HBO content via their (pay extra for) SOHO channel so you won't see that on Qucikflix.

You'd be much better off with Netflix / HULU via a US unblocking service if you want up to date content.

Yep, cheers for that. Here I was trying to do the noble (legal) thing. More fool me. I always said I would "buy locally made" if it was decent.

A very short lived trial indeed...

I'm the same, would much rather support a local company, I tried Quickflix but the content was so dire I took the unblock US option and hooked up Netflix etc a year ago. When I cancelled with Quickflix a year ago they practically begged me to stay and offered me a free 3 months and promised MUCH better content was on the way, a year later and it's still pretty crap. The half decent content they do have is all pay extra anyway.

As far as the legality of unblocking US content I think there has been some debate some say it is legal but just against the streaming companies terms others do say it it in fact not 100% legal.

I'm pretty sure it's not illegal in NZ. Either way I see nothing ethically wrong with it and would compare it to parallel importing.

Agreed. I see nothing wrong with it at all. kiwi's are merely trying their best to pay for legal content.

I'd be pretty annoyed if I got a knock on the door and prosecuted for using Netflix whilst others who are torrenting did not.

The worst they would likely do would be cancel your account, given there is no local NZ laws around it. However this could change if enough people start leeching Netflix this way. Our best ally is the (relatively) steep technical learning curve to set it all up. We must keep the numbers low so it's not worth Netflix making moves over.

HBO is tied up with Quickflix, but as mentioned, Sky NZ has the monopoly/rights on HBO content here - until that contract expires, nothing can be done.

FYI Game of Thrones is not on US netflix either - same story - rights issues! It's an HBO exclusive, and HBO streaming (HBO Go) is an additional pain to set up, as you need to have an HBO cable account (or at least the details of one).

However, if you use unotelly, you can access HBO Nordic, which has a few of the headline shows and movies, incl. GoT.

Neflix USA, Hulu/plus and Amazon Prime have stacks of content - far more than is healthy to watch. I do feel for Quickflix - good idea hampered by sucky Sky monopoly and piss-water NZ consumer protection against such predation of the (increasingly less so) captive audience.

Also hampered via pretty awful apps... I was given a 6-week gift card with a purchase at Noel Leeming this weekend so thought I'd give it a whirl despite having Netflix and Hulu. There was absolutely zero I wanted to watch except for one movie... started playing it via the app on my LG Smart TV and despite being on a UFB connection with zero issues on any other streaming service it decided to buffer at 1:20 and not start again. Quit out of the app, went back in and restarted the movie. Stalled at the exact same place.

Went to the PS3 app instead - the movie wasn't even there! The entire 'New Releases' section seemed to be missing. Even did a painstaking search via the on-screen keyboard. Not there. Went back to the LG app and thought I'd give it a third and final chance. "You can only watch this movie on the device you commenced watching it from."

Cancelled the trial there and then - hampered by content restrictions, sure, but also poorly implemented.

But thats still a lot cheaper than getting sky

I'm pretty sure this is HBO testing the waters of online only accounts, at some point there will be a tipping point in the states and they will start hemorrhaging cable users and switch to a netflix like modal
