for the last four to five months Radio Live's online stream hasn't worked in Tunein Radio or any smartphone device.

Mediaworks do not provide an app for Radio Live but do for a number of other mediaworks stations.
When contacting Mediaworks online team emails go largely ignored for several months but finally got a simple single line reply that "We do not provide support for Tunein Radio" and I would "need to contact them regarding the issue".

Emailed Tunein Radio last week and got this reply today . . .

"Thank you for contacting us regarding this issue.  Due to the broadcasters request the stream is only available on a device or PC which can support an HTML download. We apologize for the inconvenience. "

I don't understand mediaworks motivation for preventing this station from being available on smartphones.
Anybody able to shed any light on their reasons - or are they actually just trying to kill this station off?

Slightly OT but I've noticed a few US stations I used to occasionally listen to on Tunein radio while at the Gym are no longer available despite still being listed in the app. I wonder if this is for similar reasons?

I just use the main Radio Live web site to stream to my iPhone. It's slightly awkward, but it works.

I agree that it's surprising that Mediaworks have not yet released an app for Radio Live considering that they have made apps available for their other brands, and Radio Live already has a significant presense on social media. I vaguely recall them hinting many months ago that an app was forthcoming but I've heard nothing since - perhaps the recent improvements to the 3News apps have taken priority over the Radio Live app?

There is a Radio Live app now https://itunes.apple.com/nz/app/radiolive/id834742792?mt=8

Doesn't solve the issue for me though, I don't want another app, I just want my existing app (TuneIn) to work.

Thanks for sharing that! It looks like the app has just been released in the last few days and they haven't started promoting it yet.

Their loss I guess! I too use TuneIn and if a stream doesn't work I just change the station.

It's a pain. I have a Logitech UE Smart Radio that relies on TuneIn.

Thanks, also available on Google Play as of March 16.

I guess they could be blocking it on Tunein Radio so they can generate ad revenue in their own app.
But then that doesn't explain why other mediaworks stations are still available in Tnein.

Anyway, very short sighted of Mediaworks because if it isn't on Tunein then I just wont listen to it. I'm not downloading their app.

I wondered why I couldn't get the news on my way home every night!

I used to listen to the simulcast of 3News on Tunein.

That's incredibly annoying.

Like others, I don't want an additional app.

Yeah that would be an odd reason because you still hear the ads on TuneIn!

I meant that perhaps the app is generating ads (like google ads) on the screen to generate revenue (mediaworks are in receivership after all).

Mediaworks do seem to do some "interesting" things. For example The Edge is available via the TuneIn app, but not via TuneIn on Sonos. From memory this is due to the type of stream served to TuneIn by Mediaworks not being compatible with the Sonos implementation of TuneIn. But then other Mediaworks stations are available in this way......

It all seems a bit like preventing yourself from having more listeners. In the radio business doesn't "reach" translate to revenue?

not really too surprising that mediaworks online team do some pretty stupid things.
Even the TV3 ondemand service seems to do everything it can to make using it an unpleasant experience.

Update: They are looking at adding it to Tune-In. Of course as someone pointed out above, RL has an app and that's the most supported mobile product.
