I thought I'd give the free trial I got a go ... why did I bother ?  Bugger all material to watch and really awkward to unsubscribe from!

An online service where you can't cancel your subscription online, you have to ring them up to do it , and funnily enough they have huge wait times on the phone.

So anyone here who thought maybe they'd give Quickflix a go, I'd suggest they don't.

Most have come to the same conclusion re content.  GZ is full of discussions on this.  Something must have changed however, I am damn sure I signed up and cancelled at the end of the trial period all on-line via our account sign-in on their website.  I certainly didn't need to speak to anyone.

I remember trying them out a couple of years ago and they were crap, I even had to ring up and cancel, they tried offering me discounts but no discount can make up for the lack of content.

Let's be clear about the ultimate source of the naffness here. For whatever reason, HBO sees fit to share out their content in Aus but grants Sky a lock in the NZ market.

Quickflix has HBO content in Australia, but not here. Quickflix Aus recently had a setback - they now have to wait until Foxtel's finished screening the entire series of GoT before they can make it available themselves. The level of distress was obvious with the SMH pronouncing that with this deal HBO "spits in the eye of Australians".

If we had a setback like this in NZ we would be dancing in the streets.

The only reason I still pay the $15  soon to be about $12 per month is for their back catalog of the TV series Andromeda.  When that finishes I( may cancel my sub and just do PPV.

Yeah, I was able to unsubscribe online as well. IIRC it may not have been overly intuitive, but it was definitely possible.

I'd also add that content isn't the only problem. Quality of delivery is another huge barrier. We used the PS3 app to watch, and picture quality was not even SD level. We also watched a movie with foreign language segments that should have had subtitles, but didn't.

I signed-up to the free trial and cancelled it online the same day a few weeks ago, did not have to talk to anyone. Literally the worst paid-subscription service ever.

Sure I saw a bunch of Andromeda disk sets at the local Warehouse this weekend for around $10 a season - in the bargain bins. Was nearly tempted, but I have enough other stuff to watch at the moment ...

I found the PS3 stream to be better than SD TV - probably more like DVD quality, so perfectly acceptable.
are you trying to stream over a poor connection or wifi or something?

Don't know about the foreign language stuff.

Whilst it certianly isn't as good as Netflix, I think Quickflix gets a lot more hatred than it deserves.
In terms of value for money compared to Sky I think it is great.

compare the price of quickflix to, say, sky's multiroom service.

Sky's multiroom:
Requires at least Sky basic subscription ($45/month)
Multiroom is $25/month
all your channels in glorious terrible low bitrate SD
one location to watch with a giant bulky STB, terrible EPG, and terrible remote
requires contract, $99 installation fee, and if you don't want it anymore you have to physically take the box to Skys office.

Quickflix
$12/month
~600 movies (mostly older, but quite a few great movies in there)
~100 or so TV seasons - mostly UK stuff that is a bit older, but again generally all good quality
no contract, $5 (?) sign up fee, easier to disconnect than Sky

available on almost any smart device you care to mention and watch it anywhere - consoles, tvs, blu-ray players, ipad, iphone etc
Good SD (480p I'd say) picture

so yeah, it's not Netflix, but I think it compares pretty well to the other stuff 'officially' available in NZ.

We are streaming over wifi, but using the same wifi connection that we use for NetFlix, which has great picture quality. Perhaps the wifi performance of the PS3 is to blame here.

Yeah, it was a bit odd. I know that this movie definitely had subtitles for that segment, as we've seen it before.

Its certainly cheaper than Sky, but a combination of uninteresting content (for us), and overall poor user experience has put us off.

The problem I think quickfix has, is  content agreements. However I think for a fixed fee, it should include all you can eat access, rather than having to pay on top of the subscription. The benefit of igloo  is that you don't need a subscription to hire movies, you can pay as you go.

This is all I can find for how to cancel, not sure how everyone else is doing it online.

I'm reasonably happy with it for $12 a month. It is not great, but the movies and tv series list is increasing slowly. Bugs me that there is no rental option for premium tv series. I don't want to own the series through quickflix.
We make enough use of it to justify $12 a month at the moment.

same with Quickflix.  you can just rent the PPV movies if you want without any subscription,

Content is King, and while Sky has all these online rights they don't appear to be using, QF (and Telecom/Sparks new service, and Netflix) will suffer.

Also, not having it on the AppleTV (or other media streaming box ala. Amazon FireTV would stop me subscribing).

We have been on our two month trial now for one month and watched two things. Just not worth it.

Yes, thats an often overlooked stumbling block. There has to be a consumer friendly way to get the streaming service onto a TV. Its not enough to only have options to stream to your browser or smart device. You also need to cater for people with older TVs, so reliance on smart TV apps is also not a good idea.

And as I've discovered recently, its not even good enough to have iOS support and reliance on AirPlay to make the last hop of the journey to the TV. Putting aside for a moment that it would only cater for people with an Apple TV & iOS devices, the AirPlay implementation is far too flakey to be relied upon.

If it's too hard to make your streaming service available on all the most popular media devices, partner with one and show consumers how easy it is to watch your awesome catalogue of content using an inexpensive & unobtrusive little box that plugs right into your TV.
