Just reading some interesting articles in the Aussie media about how tradtional pay per view providers are getting soiled trousers at the thought of Netflix launching in Oz.

This is looking more and more likley as Netflix have just announced they have won the broadcasting rights to Gotham - but as Netflix cant play the series until it ends, it could be a good carrot for an Aussie launch in early 2015. Lets hope they can extend that lauch to NZ to try and break that Sky stranglehold for us Kiwi's!

Lias: I actually think Netflix being "legit" in NZ would be bad for them, and bad for us.

Because of the messed up way intellectual property crap works, they'd have to get the local rights to content, meaning we wouldn't get the same access to content they currently offer. Netflix NZ would have less content, and probably older content than it's US equivalent. I believe people would try the NZ Netflix, be put off because it's the same old same old, and it would damage the Netflix brand.

Until we get some law changes aimed at breaking the way the US imposed copyright/IP system works (for instance the concepts of regional rights, regional availability, regional pricing etc need to be legislated against), I think the best thing for NZ consumers is for Netflix to stay the hell away from our market.

Netflix will need to get a LOT of rights before there's a worthwhile service...

Actually the OPs title is not quite correct, Netflixs have the streaming rights to Gotham in Oz, which only kick in after Nine has finished screening the show on regular TV,

if you sign up to 'minimal content', legally, in NZ$ - you could still use a DNS switcher to get Netflix USA etc. Would make the region switching seem more legit to 'joe blogs then' and remove an existing barrier to entry :-)
