An interesting development of all the new online streaming providers in NZ is the fact that a lot of content now is or going to be 'only' available online.

It raises a few points.

Did those that wanted online streaming think that it would be this way or be more a 2 option model like happens in most countries overseas?

Will those that complained about the previous model like to see this or think that because there are a lot of people that liked the old style we should put pressure on to have both options?

Do people think that if there are many providers with the costs and usage requirements associated with each that content viewership in NZ might actually fall not rise?

Are you talking about series like Orange is the New Black?

These premiere on streaming services, then they are usually shopped to traditional TV channels, who can buy them if they wish. Shows like Happy Valley etc are on TV1.

A division from a licensing point of view is great, Netflix can stream it, TV can broadcast it.

If you look at it as NZ only sure. But that is down to NZ TV Channels choosing not to pick up those shows.

Outlander came out on a US channel months ago - Lightbox happened to pick it up. TV1/2/3 or SKY could have picked it up but chose not to.

Online streaming services may be a force of competition on traditional channels to get more and better shows, but end of the day a streaming service will always have a broader catalog (due to number of hours in the day a TV channel can broadcast).

Are you sure? I thought that Lightbox had the rights to NZ and only they can show it on ANY platform at all?

KillerKiwi2005,

Aren't both those shows 'any' run not just 'first' run rights?

Sorry wasn't clear - I don't know if a TV channel could run it now with Lightbox now having it - but a TV channel could have got Outlander here before Lightbox did.

No a TV channel can't run it.  The pity is that all that has really happened is that one model 'terresterial' which had the rights for all forms of viewing has been replaced with another model 'online' which has all the rights for all forms of viewing. In other countries you still have the option to do either but in NZ it seems we are going the way of exclusivity.
