I see that all of a sudden we need an 'account' to watch TVNZOD.

Any idea why? Seems like an unnecessary headache for them to manage as well as us to have yet another log on...

To make sure that you're in NZ? - easily checked without registration.
To track you?
To advertise to you?
To charge you?

It came up last year that they were planning it. Not sure anyone figured out the actual reason behind it.

I just used a disposable email. Don't see why I need to give out all my info just to watch catch up tv online when they don't know who I am when I watch on live TV.

From the Stuff article cited (Sep 2014) :

"Chief executive Kevin Kenrick said the registration requirement would let Television New Zealand provide a more "personalised" service for viewers, but acknowledged it could also be a money-spinner."

What state television? - it's all gone commercial.
At least with state television you didn't get commercials. (Yes, I am old enough to remember smile)

Pretty sure it was an interview with someone from TVNZ a few weeks back where they said they had no intention of monetizing it. I guess that should be an 'at this time'?

I thought it might be so they can track how many devices you watch it on, like netflix....but it doesn't make much sense for 'free' tv.

Fair point. Radio New Zealand is editorially quite good, whereas the commercialised state owned television broadcaster is a joke.

This is TVNZ Ondemand we're talking about, home of chucking a black bar across your fullscreen video if you block the ad content served on the page.

They call it an error lol

This error is caused by an ad-blocking software (like Ad Blocker Plus) running on your computer that is stopping our ads from playing. This software could be running as an individual program, part of an anti-virus program, or could be integrated into your browser. If your computer is stopping the ads from playing, this is likely to be producing the black bar on your screen.
