Now this could be a question /statement which will differ for a lot of people, but my personal opinion is that my PS3 now satisfies all my streaming needs. I have Netflix (us library), Lightbox and all the UK channels Iplayer, 4od etc, all without having to change devices/regions etc. The quality I find is excellent on all..Lightbox a little less satisfying than on Samsung tv but hey.

Depends what you're after. I personally find the Apple TV set to US region perfect for my needs. Most missing apps like BBC iPlayer can be airplayed from iPhone / iPad and I find the Apple tv Netflix UI easier to get around.

Or an Apple TV with plexconnect. Which will give you a lot of the bbc iplayer content. No AirPlay needed.

DItto, I do prefer the PS4 as the interface is better but the experience is similar.

I have a PS3, rarely used now, I use a R.Pi instead for XBMC as I don't stream much. I find the interface just awful - though I haven't checked this stuff out for a year - is it any better? We use a laptop on HDMI for iPlayer.

I only use Lightbox for now but agree that the PS3 with Dualshock controller is a very good appliance for this. An excellent outcome considering I thought the PS3 might be ready for the dustbin this year.

I was really surprised at the extensive range of apps on the PS3, but unfortunately the wifi on my 1st gen model is so bad that I can't stream anything properly. Waiting for school hols to get someone in to run some Cat6 under the living room floor so I can wire it up.

I do find all streaming apps pretty easy to control with the dualshock controller, even searching on Netflix and Lightbox not too much of a hassle with no keyboard. I will have to have a look at the Ps4 interface as i have not seen that yet but not in too much of a rush yet.

For me I like the Roku best. Huge number of apps, with the only one missing being BBC iPlayer. That said I reckon I'd be happy with nearly anything that a) has it's own remote (no way do I want to unlock and launch an app on my Android or iOS device just to pause or turn the volume up), and b) has Netflix, Hulu, iHeartRadio or similar, and at least one of the decent movie rental apps.

But I do like the Apple TV set to US, though anything requiring a US credit card is irritating (if I've an Apple TV, I'm going to be using the iTunes store). Hulu is ok cause it's just a flat amount per year. But getting US credit more often is annoying.

I agree with the OP and the above comment. The PS3 (and PS4) are good streaming players but I really dislike having to use the Sony controllers for TV/Video applications.

I run two full 7.1 AVR systems, one in the Theater room and another full system in the lounge and almost all devices (HPTC, PS3's, PS4's, Apple TV) have HDMI splitters to feed simultaneously to both AVR's.

Along with this setup I wrote my own 'Universal' Remote Control (linux web server based php system) that controls most devices and many other home automation devices via IR (using iTach devices) , Direct IP commands or RS232 control. We use our iPads or iPhones as remotes.

The issue I have with Playstations is the lack of IR or IP control when used in a Home Theater situation. They do support HDMI control but this is limited and you cannot fully control streaming services with it.

For Netflix, I now find the Apple TV in conjunction with the Apple 'Remote' app on the iPhone 6 Plus gives the best control experience. For Lightbox, we currently use the PS3.

I actually have a normal IR remote for my old PS3, along with the game controllers, so that's good, but now I have about 7 remotes and they all look similar! Definitely asking for a universal remote for my birthday this year :)

If you have a Sony tv, (not sure which models, but I expect most) you can use the TV remote to control the PS3 or ps4. It's pretty sweet.

The Harmony Ultimate has Bluetooth support, head that way if you want to control a PS3 via a smart remote.

yup, the interface in the app is the same, but the interface to get to the app is horrible with the ps3
