This week I am giving back my Sky decoder, having bought a shiny new Panny PVR and booked a tech to come over on Tuesday to run internet cabling to my home theatre location, and sort out my Freeview signal/antenna. The only things we ever really watched on Sky were Living Channel (me) and Cartoon Network (the young'n) and I can't justify spending over $70 per month on just that. I'm streaming Netflix and Hulu Plus over VDSL via Apple TV and Unotelly, plus I have access to other free-to-air channel apps from the UK and Australia via the PS3 or my iPad. I may also add an HTPC to the mix in the form of the HP Stream Mini when it becomes available in New Zealand. So I thought I was all set up and ready to cut the cord.
However, in a case of very bad timing, the Cricket World Cup has re-ignited my love of cricket, so I'm looking for ways to follow the Black Caps without spending over $100 per month to keep Sky with sport included. I've been through the other threads and I see that some people have used Starsports.com with mixed success. I can access their site with Unotelly but I can't find any subscription or packages to purchase. Do they sell by the event or do they have a monthly rate? And do I need a VPN to get a decent stream? I see some people have found that it has a very long and complex trace route when watching with Unotelly, and quality has been patchy.
Another alternative is Willow TV. It says "all cricket action" although it doesn't seem to have the upcoming tour to England as part of their schedule - but does say "more coming soon" so perhaps that's still to be added. They appear to have all the other planned fixtures though, and their Apple TV app looks slick. Has anyone used this, and if so, how do you find it?
Thirdly Sling US is looking attractive, as it has ESPN and ESPN 2, plus Cartoon Network for my son, and a good selection of lifestyle telly for me such as Food Network and HGTV. But would ESPN or ESPN 2 ever carry the cricket? If it did, then it'd be the no-brainer choice of the three. I note Sling Interntational (formerly Dishworld) has a sports option for $10 per month and that includes Willow TV, but would that enable me to view Willow via the Apple TV app? I wouldn't really watch the other channels, and would sub directly to Willow for the extra $5 per month if it meant the difference between having access to the Apple TV app or not.
Alternatively, does anyone else use another service that they find good for NZ cricket? I'm not looking to spend too much - max $15-20 per month.
