starting watching the series last night as soon as it went live via the netflix app on my oppo bdp and got a very unstable hd stream, an occasional 720/1080 spurt then dropping back to sd and worse.
5.1 sound was constant though.

other programs played ok.

this morning tried to watch daredevil and got an error message saying they were having trouble with this program.
fired up the pc and the show streams fine - hd + 5.1 sound.

does netflix use different servers for online viewing and application based viewing ?

Just watched the entire first episode on my Chromecast. It didn't stutter or buffer and seemed to be HD all the time.

But I was logged onto the US Netflix site, not NZ.

Who's your ISP?

Are you on the NZ version of Netflix or are you using a proxy/vpn to get the US edition?

If anything was going to affect things on Netflix's side it would have been House of Cards S3 premiere.

I watched the first three episodes, starting about 5min after it went live, and it was HD the whole time with no buffering/stability issues, on my PC. Haven't tried it from the app. Netflix NZ, so no DNS/VPN trickery.

I heard that Spark hasn't got Netflix cache servers implemented inside it's network yet, so traffic is coming from Sydney.

It's possible there is a bit of congestion between Spark and Netflix in Sydney.

Would be interesting to hear if other Spark users are having similar issues.

Just tested on my PS3, US Netflix, Vodafone Cable (100/20) and Unotelly. 1080 5.1 all the time no buffering.

Why wouldn't netflix put their content on local Akamai clusters like every other content provider? (Lightbox, tnnz on demand, etc)

Afaik the big CDNs weren't interested in their large traffic volumes (i.e. for Akamai it would hurt their relationship with the cable company ISPs).

As far as I'm aware Netflix primarily use their own CDN, Netflix OpenConnect.

That said, it's a bit odd,  I see akamaiso and akamaitp among the CDN options, and if the last two characters refernce TLDs, they are East Timor and Somalia Akamai locations, but I may be completely offbase there.

If they aren't willing to put content into nz locations, then I think it wouldn't be surprising to find congestion problems as they get more and more customers. All the smaller providers do it.

Off topic: just watched first episode of daredevil. Not bad.

They will support ISPs or other providers in offering caching servers. There are at least a few in NZ already (for example, I had a stream come from 103.13.116.194 earlier today, and it seems to be a Vibe-hosted server), and quite a few in Aus.
