Wondering if anyone here is having the same issue I am with the HBO Go app on Roku - and I realize I'm probably peeing in the wind here given that HBO Go requires subscription authentication against a cable provider in the US and not too many here will have that (I'm lucky enough to be using a family member's subscription).

I have a Samsung TV with a Roku 3 and UnoTelly thru Slingshot at my house, and at my daughter's place she has a Samsung TV with Roku Streaming Stick, UnoTelly and Orcon. Up until recently (approx the last 6 weeks) HBO Go was always in HD but now it is in SD (or worse) when played thru the Roku's. However, when played using the Sammie SmartHub app it is in HD, as it is when using the PC or tablet. This is happening at both my place and my daughter's.

I have tried changing the UnoTelly DNS server from AKL to SYD or even LA to see if that is the issue, but no go. I posted the question on the Roku forum (obviously without mentioning I am accessing thru a DNS service and outside the USA as they get very precious about that) and one of the guys mentioned it's possible the Roku's are using a different CDN than the TV and PCs. If it is I would expect this would be affecting a ton of people and not just me.

I've logged a ticket with UnoTelly and they are looking into it, but I just thought I would ask and see if anyone else is also having this issue. Because I have two different ISPs (even though they are owned by the same parent) and I have two different UnoTelly accounts I am using then the only common factor is the Roku's.

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? UnoTelly got me to try the HBO Speed Test setting but it made no difference at all.

Thanks.

Yeah ... I have noticed that as well. I use to watch last season last year in HD but not this season.
I thought it had happened around the same time as they launched the HBO Now.
I do use Unotelly and also have access to getflix, will try and test it with Getflix later.

Brilliant, thanks for that. Will be interesting to see if it also happens with Getflix. What ISP are you with?

Hopefully the UnoTelly guys will get back to me overnight.

My ISP is Vodafone, I have not tried the Getflix settings yet but have had a play around with the HBO Speed Test settings and things have actually improved.
My tv is only 720 but the quality of GoT is much better then what I was getting before.
I will try the Getflix settings over the weekend when I have more time.

I'll try and sign up for a free trial of Getflix or UnblockUS tonight and see if it makes a difference.

I suspect this is probably part of Apple's plan for world domination by forcing HBO to allocate a ton more bandwidth to HBO Now which still exclusive to Apple. LOL. I'm getting cynical in my old age...

I just tried an Amazon Fire TV Stick I have access to and that is also playing only in SD. In addition I signed up for a free trial of Unblock-US and set the router DNS addresses to theirs, and rebooted but no change...so it appears it is a "problem" at HBO's end.

I've been scouring the web for anything about this but I can't find anything. Surely we can't be the only ones experiencing this?!

With using Unotelly and selecting the HBO Speed Test settings worked for me.
I changed over to Getflix, tried HBO and can get HD quality viewing.

The UnoTelly guys have gotten back to me. They set up a test server using my configuration and managed to replicate the issues I'm having, which is good.

I need to Skype them and go thru it with them, but unfortunately it won't be until tomorrow morning.

Will let y'all know how it goes.
