Possibly related. But also because iti is not a level playing field. If you are an overseas company, you get advantages when selling to the NZ market, over local suppliers. The thing is that how can they enforce a company to signup to NZs system. WoOn't people just signup to the US version of the service instead?

I suppose the defining factor will be if the service is specifically marketed at NZ as opposed to those marketed at another country which we just happen to purchase from.

For example NZ specific pricing or NZ specific advertising/websites.

I agree they should be forced to pay NZ tax if they are going to make a point of digging into the NZ market.

What's the bet that this'll result in another iTunes price hike?

Don't they already charge and pay GST? Or is that only on Apple hardware purchased via their Australian operated online store?  I know they do charge it on hardware.

Possibly; I read that they don't on a famously-inaccurate news site...

Be interesting to see if all of Steams prices go up 15% if this takes effect.
That plus the rapidly sinking NZD will probably curb my games buying a lot. We already get regional price gouged, I suspect this will just make it worse.

Wonder how they are going to police this.

They're doing it with digital providers because its easier to police.

There are only a few major providers and you've targeted the majority of customers. Plus we're not leading this we're following what is happening in other countries.

Applying this to individual online shppers is a lot harder as there are sooo many sellers

I don't think so as you are in the US aren't you? Prime is only available in the US.... Your address shows that you are in the US....

On the mid range Netflix GST will add less than $2.00 per month, I am not going to lose sleep over this. I don't buy often from off shore so again not a biggie for me

I like how we get the warning. If too many people get upset at the warning, the National government can change their mind and back out of it.
Come to think of it, I cant remember any surprises under John Key's government.

At present I have a US Netflix (monthly) account (using Unotelly), so will I be charged GST with this type of account? and if so, would I then be better to change to Netflix NZ account?

Because probably 90% oin folk aren't as geeky clever as you and subscribe to local Netflix.
But really its about the bigger tax take of GST on all on line (offshore) transactions. Which will net $$$$$$$
