Looking into dns services and the set up on my ATV. Only unotelly says netflix forces public look ups on ATV, all the other dns services I have looked at do not mention it in their setup guides. As I am unable to do this on my RBI service, can a unotelly user tell me if this is actually the case.

Yes, the Apple TV will use its default DNS servers, unless it can't reach them, at which point it will use the ones you specify.

You can block access to the default DNS servers by changing some settings on your router, as specified here: http://help.unotelly.com/support/solutions/articles/192836-why-do-i-need-to-block-public-dns

This is no different than Netflix on Android or Netflix on Chromecast. You have to block/redirect/change Google and OpenDNS services on your network.

I run bind9 locally (which forwards to Unotelly) and my syslog is full of ATV4 service, including Netflix, DNS requests and I don't block any requests to public servers.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

A DNS redirection (as others have stated above) is the best and easiest way to solve this. Chromecasts, the Fire TV, Roku, Android TV, Android and iOS all force public lookups to a degree but with DNS you can always overcome this.

You can manually configure the DNS for the WiFi connection in Android on-device, it's more ideal to change it at the router of course.

Unfortunately my RBI system does not allow me to make any changes to the router, I suppose I can add the dns settings to the ipad and airplay to the appletv

Then stick another router between the devices and the RBI one that you can configure how you like. A basic 100 megabit port one is dirt cheap now.

You can just put Unotelly's DNS directly into the Apple TV. I've not changed my router at home, I just have Unotelly DNS in the ATV, an old iPad and the PS3. Between those three devices I can get everything I want to stream both locally and internationally.

I agree - I've got 3 Apple TVs (1 each of Gen 2, 3 & 4), and have made no other changes other than entering Unotelly into the DNS settings for the relevant network - all work fine. I don't do anything with DNS blocking or re-direction.

Exactly the same. Four ATVs with DNS changed on each device to unotelly. They work fine and have done for many years.

Same for PS3.

I've altered nothing on new modem, and works fine, i'm currently watching Enterprise which is the US site.

Yet the unotelly site says need to block public DNS for Sony Playstations, They've got that wrong as well.

US, unless I change the Netflix setting on my Unotelly dashboard to another region. The Australian TV stations clash with the NZ ones in Unotelly's channel settings but it's not a big deal to swap between them in the app. Normally I leave it on the Australian ones, though.
