House of Cards isn't available on NZ Netflix. It is available in other countries. You can use a service like Unotelly to access Netflix content from other countries, this will enable you to watch House of Cards in NZ.

Check Filmefy to see which region you will need to set unotelly (or another service) to. Sorry, I can't post links yet.

Awesome. It all works and I have now got a free Netflix USA trial. Why doesn't everyone do this? I'm a big amateur and I managed it. Thanks again

Everyone who wants can do it. You can use a Netflix NZ account, pay in NZ$ but access any Netflix content by switching regions.

So I have NZ Netflix. Do I need to buy USA Netflix as well (I'm on a free trial). Also can I email other members directly in case I block up threads with my silly questions. New to geekzone but love it.

No need for an extra account. A Netflix account gives you access anywhere in the world (in case you travel). To access US content you just need a DNS service such as UnoTelly, DNS4Me on Unblock-US and switch to the US, still using your Netflix NZ account.

Am I the only one that finds it funny that we can't get House of Cards on Netflix when it's a Netflix original?

Lightbox had House of Cards. If they don't have now it's a development.

Also, here is the explanation why House of Cards is not available on Netflix NZ (and yes, Lightbox holds the streaming rights, as I pointed out before):

For those who are confused as to why Netflix is unable to stream some of its original content in Australia and New Zealand, you're not alone. But the explanation is quite simple: Netflix doesn't actually own any of its original content.

Instead of producing its original content, Netflix simply signs an agreement for exclusive streaming rights to a production, as well as a first-run window agreement. After that window expires, however, the production company is free to license the content to anyone, including home video distributors and international networks and streaming services.

Such is the case with House of Cards and other early Netflix originals. The company bought global rights for more recent series like Marco Polo, though.

That stands in contrast to Time Warner (NYSE:TWX) subsidiary HBO. HBO produces its originals itself, which gives it complete control over where those series end up. When it expands internationally, its original content is the key for keeping its costs low. Comparatively, Netflix's costs to expand internationally include thousands of new content-licensing contracts, which drive profits in those markets down into negative territory.

Because Netflix doesn't hold the international rights to many of its originals, those rights are often bought by other networks or streaming services in international markets well before Netflix even lays plans to expand into those markets.

As such, House of Cards fans in Australia and New Zealand have been getting their fill from Showcase (a premium cable network in Australia), TV3 (a nationwide broadcast network in New Zealand), and Lightbox (a Netflix analog in New Zealand). With many potential subscribers having viewed its original content already, it decreases the appeal of a new Netflix subscription.

Originally it was a Mediaworks (TV3) acquisition.  It played S1 and S2 (and is now replaying S2 on FourI think).
If Lightbox had it and no longer has it then I'm guessing that the rights window expired.

As I mentioned, Lightbox hasn't had House of Cards for ages - only reason I know this is because I got in to House of Cards and watched Season 1 & 2 just before Lightbox removed it (it was in their 'disappearing soon' carousel in June or around that time). That article was written in March.
