I'm trying to decide which VPN to get for travel to Vietnam next month. I'm over making sure banks don't block access to online accounts etc, and as the country has heaps of free WIFI it seems like a good time to get one.

Needs to connect 2 devices - IPad and Laptop (windows)

Plus I wouldn't mind using it once we get home to expand our telly watching.

So looking for a paid option which runs fast and has the option of a NZ (or at least an Australian) node for travel

I've heard PureVPN is excellent, and they appear to be having a special at the moment (get a year for free). They work on both mobile and laptop devices and have a huge range of servers to choose from.

For surfing from work, McDonalds, or countries you need an injection to go to, I just set up a VPN endpoint on my home router. If your router can't handle it then certainly your home PC can. Obviously you need a good upload speed to make this viable but if you have UFB of any sort it is the way to go.

The review site isn't that bad: get's a yellow for being based in HK jursidicition and a red for logging time stamps. I'm not torrenting or doing anything illegal - so I don't really care about the timestamps

The fact that torrent freak didn't include them is a good thing from my point of view (I am a writer - torrents are thieves )

Pure is quite good but I really prefer Astrill. Have been using Astrill for 5 years and Pure for 2 years.

I use Witopia but since having fibre installed at home I run a L2TP server on my router. This is good for home access and to encrypt data traffic when using public WiFi.

Yeah stuck with VDSL until I get out of my contract with WXC :-( At the moment the priority is security when travelling and not showing up as logging in from Vietnam on varioius sites like banks and Paypal! I know this ain't quite the right forum but I figured there would be plenty of VPN opinions here!

I think you mean "Torrent users are thieves" or possibly "Torrenting is theft", to which I'd respectfully disagree. There is nothing inherently illegal with the technology.

That aside I think you'll find people have been reading books they didn't pay the authors for for quite some time. The whole lending your book to a friend, buying second hand or god forbid using a library.

PureVPN does have a nice website, few servers in NZ and OpenVPN support, looks pretty good for your purposes
I haven't really ever used VPNs when travelling but sounds like a good idea

As with VPNs, Torrents arent inherently bad. they are simply often used for not so nice purposes. think of online filelockers, they all have legal uses too but are also used for other purposes.

VPNs are also sometimes used to hide traffic or identifying figures when getting up to no good.

as to your question itself, i use 3 VPN endpoints constantly and if need be would fire up temporary instances.

I trust my existing agreements with network providers over the many vpn services out there. Thats not to say many of the services are bad but I prefer to use ip space i have ownership over outside of home IPs and such as i can recognize the IP off the bat if any issue does come up.

Not being on torrentfreaks list is actually something to consider more deeply as to why, is it simply that they log data for legal purposes of their own or is there a more serious reason torrentfreak see them as not so flash.

i run an endpoint on my home connection, this is mainly for the purpose of remote administration rather than a full vpn service, but in a pinch would be as simple as unticking an advance option or two for the routing to pipe all the data.

Other than that, i have endpoints on my personal servers which i trust, within both US and Netherlands.

Libraries pay authors in some circumstances http://natlib.govt.nz/publishers-and-authors/public-lending-right-for-new-zealand-authors

Yes I know bittorrent is just a protocol and has legitimate users - most of whom are not likely to be buying a a cheap monthly VPN

Given that I've yet to see anyone manage to profit from seeding a torrent, I don't think it's a terribly accurate analogy. Even more so when you consider seeding a torrent costs virtually nothing, whereas printing off several thousand copies of a book would be rather expensive.
