I posted this topic on the "Unblocking Services Discussion", but didn't get a single reply so I'm trying here....

Im considering switching Fibre providers as although my service works perfectly (DNS wizardry is handled automatically by my modem so i can access overseas Netflix content well) I'm not getting a particularly good deal in terms of value for money.

So I'm wondering about switching providers and maybe going for naked broadband from Spark who use on the Fibre 100 plan the HG659b modem.

Has anyone managed to get the whole static routes thing working with this modem? I would love some assurances from the GZ community that if i jump to Spark I'm not going to stop watching my overseas Netflix?

I haven't tried the blackholing with the HG630 or 659.

I normally recommend a 3rd party router or something that you can play running OpenWRT to yes do double NAT, but at least have full control over your destiny.

All that Spark need is PPPoE over VLAN 10 with anything in the username & password. After that it's up to you if you want to use the Spark modem or a 3rd party one.

If you have an existing, compatible router that has the features you want, why not just it with the new ISP?

More than likely the reason people didn't respond to you is because most of the community doesn't stick to ISP provided router ;) - I've got no experience and I know many people around here have switched to Edgerouters, Mikrotiks and generally better routers. I would personally recommend investing in a decent router that does what you require like the ERL or ERX

Thanks for the responses and to avoid drip feeding, a quick summary of my set up..

Fibre Modem in the garage hard wired into a TP Link Gigabit Switch (Model TL-SG1016) in my linen cupboard.

More network cables running out to the bedrooms and the living room, and a couple of network sockets behind the TV - network cables into Smart TV, Apple TV3 3 etc.

Has the TP Gigabit switch the ability to fix DNS settings? Or would it be sensible to install one of the other modems you mention somewhere in the system? I don't have a preferred modem which i currently own, its just the above set up..

Any further advice based on the above?

If you're looking for a better deal, why are you picking what is probably the most expensive provider?

You could go for something like Bigpipe, use your existing setup tp link, get two months free since you already have fibre, and pay a lower monthly cost all without having a contract. (And if you use the link in Michael murphys profile get an extra $20 credit.)

Ok, so this isn't helpful.

I did the address check on the Bigpipe website, it claims i can only be offered VDSL (weird as i do have Fibre), so i think a call to them to confirm would be in order..

Eta: Bigpipe doesn't offer ufb all over the country - so it could be you are in an area they don't serve

Ok, so Bigpipe confirmed thy don't provide fibre in my area...

However, i did notice an offer from Spark which was pretty competitive - $89.99/month - unlimited (100mb download speed + Lightbox)

A quick review of other other big players, shows this is a pretty good deal Spark are offering...
