Got a bit of a strange problem (strange for me anyway).

I've got an old LG TV 42PB4D-AA (approx 10 years old). I've got an Android box and Kodi etc. just works perfectly well!

I then purchased another Android box, this time for my father in law. I set it up here first, so it was more or less just to plug it in for him. When I set it up on my old LG TV, the playback was perfect, just as I expected.

I then took the Android box down to the father in law.

He's got a much newer TV. A Samsung UA50JU6400S.

When I plugged the box in, I was pretty disappointed. It just didn't look nearly as good, as it does on my old TV.

It's like it's missing frames during playback. I can watch football/rugby whatever and it doesn't look natural. You'll see someone run and then it's like you cut out a splitsecond of it. Very noticeable.

I also played a film on his TV. Just didn't look as clear and natural.

I checked the same film, when I came home and it looked way way better on my old LG TV.

Why???

If he watches a film through Netflix, it looks perfectly fine.

He's got fibre internet too.

Frame rate from the box will not match the source file. This really trips up motion interpolation on the tv.

Check the box is outputting 24 or 60 hz for films. 50 hz seems to default on some box and tv combinations and that is only any good for English tv shows made in 50hz.

What resolution and frame rate is the TV and Android box connecting with?
That picture 'clipping' is usually when you have a video that is in a number of frames per second (fps) that the TV won't support. Eg the movie is 23.9(24)fps and the TV can't match. So some frames get dropped or repeated to keep the video in time. It's a common problem.

Have a look here and see if this helps:

Thanks for both replies.

I'll give it a go, as soon as I get a chance.

Turn off the bells and whistles on the tv that "enhance" the picture ...

I re-read this and are you saying there are two issues?

1) bad picture image quality

2) the skipped frames that cause a certain jerkiness

1) The stream doesn't look as good as on his TV. I realise that I can expect a better image quality on my old plasma TV, compared to his LED, so this is fair enough.

2) Yes, it skips. Very short, but very noticeable.

Just not sure what settings to play with.

Also, the box is wired to the box, so not running over WiFi.

Finally, the box is a YUNDOO Y2 TV Box Amlogic S912 Octa-core Android 6.0 OS  -  2GB+16GB.

Bad picture can also be the levels or colourspace are wrong. If you play limited range video content on a output set to full range, you get more banding since the conversion from one 8 bit space to another has a lot of error. Same for if you are outputting RGB instead of YUV, any processing done in the box will introduce more error.

The inbuilt play is free of any of those possible errors, and also seem to adapt to almost any framerate even ones that are not 23.97/24/50/60 based.

Depending on the media you are playing, you may have had people do "helpful" things to it like "fix" the black level for when played on a PC and similar. These things can really mess with it, and depending on the display it may autodetect the levels being wrong and change - some seem to and others definatly do not.

On the HDMI input it uses, go in the samsung TV settings and disable all extra image processing functions for that input. Turn off motion plus and all other gimmicks on the tv

On the box itself check the HDMI setting, see if its on autodetect or has been manually force set to an fixed resolution.

If you turn off motionplus and the other things then you have just disabled the reason to get the samsung over the veon.

Is it possible to turn motion plus off for HDMI1 only and not other HDMI inputs?
