Nothing new you say? Well maybe not to Samsung users.

I noted a 'now available on android' logo on the most recent advert. Out of curiosity, a quick check on my Moto X g2 confirms its no longer locked to samsung

HUZZAH!

Or I'm just behind the times :P

Still useless on android boxes because of BS HDMI out limitations that do not affect the web version on windows PCs?

BlueShift:

Does it chromecast?

We’re currently working on support for Chromecast with the TVNZ OnDemand app.

However, in the meantime, you can still enjoy all your favourite shows on the big screen with Chromecast by ‘Tab Casting’ on a computer.

Seems not. Nor as pointed out with a video out interface. Android 4.3 required, Have to wonder if its changed provider since the revamp and thats when it moved away from samsung app store only to general play store

Hard to tell from the comments other than the December update breaking older samsung tablets not running 4.3 as they force you out the door.

I discovered that it was available on wider Android devices just by accident, about a month or so back. You'd think that now that OD is available on more devices that TVNZ would be promoting that fact a lot more.

Anyway, it works on my OnePlus One. Not that I'd really use it, except in rare circumstances, owing to the fact that it doesn't support Chromecast and I prefer to watch on a big screen.

Why was it ever restricted?  That makes no sense at all.

A bit like publically funded channels like TVNZ6 only being broadcast on Sky?!

They initially had a deal with Samsung whereby (as I understand it) Samsung paid for exclusive rights to TVNZ OD on their devices. Samsung bore the cost of developing the app for their devices.

A deal more beneficial to Samsung than TVNZ I think.

The flip side (as I understand it) is that sadly now the licensing rights have lapsed Samsung will be removing the app from their smart TV's.  There's always a downside!

I am pretty sure there were like 200+ apps available under the Samsung "smart' TV service when I brought the TV.  Lucky if there is a small % of that now.  They didn't advise me the apps were being deleted nor have I received any compensation.  I am thinking a CGA claim ;-)  (sorry, couldn't resist)

The TV is still fully usable, and you can plugin another media box. But I do think they need to put a warning one the box if they don't want CGA claims, that do clearly say that some features may be phased out over time, and that they are an 'free addon complimentary service' and not part of the actual product itself.

I remember the days when you could only get the TVNZ app on andorid smartphone, if you had a select samsung smartphone, such as a S3. At that stage it could only be downloaded via samsungs own store. Not great for consumers.

I've no idea what the future holds for the TVNZ OD app on Samsung smart TVs, but I think they'd be foolish not to keep it. There's only a very few apps on Samsung smart TVs that aren't junk. If they get rid of something that people are likely to want - eg TVNZ OD, 3Now, Youtube, Netflix, then Samsung loses something in comparison to other brands. After all, the whole idea behind them having exclusive rights to the TVNZ app to begin with, was so that they'd have that point-of-difference.

Not saying you're wrong, just that logically speaking it would be foolish of Samsung to drop the TVNZ app. The future will tell. So far it's still on my old Samsung smart tv!

I have an HP Slate Extreme which I think is Android 4.2 with HTML 4. It has never been able to run on demand to date. Is there any hope? :(
