Is scanning/seeking/shkpping/fast forwarding, whatever you want to call, in a Chromecast purely the domain of the application? It all seems so inconsistent.

YouTube is ok and seems to maintain control. But other apps lose the fact the video is even playing. Or have to go into it twice to realise which video is playing.

It's the main annoyance with a Chromecast. Even the google home app doesnt give you anything other that pause and stop.

Same thing happens on android too. Its why I use spotify connect to my echo's instead mostly. Chromecast barfs when the phone momentarily changes wifi networks or falls back to cellular and its not uncommon for things like twitch when chromecasting to just start playing on the phone leaving the chromecast playing as well.

Getting the video to start is fine.....its the when you've been watching for 10 mins and need to rewind by a minute or so that's painful. Either you can't, or you go back into the app and it restarts the video, or theres no scrubbing control.

According to this article, you can use your normal TV remote if you have HDMI-CEC on your telly. I haven't tried it, but my TV is pretty old so unlikely to have the feature.

orly....something to try next time I use it.  That would make for an infinitely better experience.

My telly is a 2008 samsung with CEC, so I'd expect your sony does.  They called it bravia link I thought.

That sounds promising. Yep, Bravia Sync is what the article says. It's on the to-do list for this week, in that case. I use a Logitech Harmony so I assume it would work when set to TV. Will report back.

In my experience the CEC only works for playing and pausing?

Well, it worked for me - kind of. Enabled HDMI Control in my TV settings (obviously it was made before Bravia Sync was a thing) and I could pause and unpause but not scrub back and forth. This was using my logitech harmony remote. The search for the perfect solution continues...
