Does anyone here have experience of the pre-Android Sony Bravia (around 2013)? After years of ignoring the ‘smart’ features on ours, I got curious and started experimenting. What I have found is simply unbelievable. It is so broken on so many levels that I have to wonder how a manufacturer like Sony could screw something up this badly. Maybe there is something wrong with our TV?

Even if there is, that does not explain the so-called ‘apps’ that come with the TV. I am completely mystified how anyone ever could have thought that such an endless collection of pointless rubbish videos could be a selling point for anyone, yet there they are. The fact that they cannot be deleted or organised in any way also doesn’t help. The reason I mention them, though, is that they all play fine. Good quality, no buffering or hiccups. That is important for the rest of my complaint.

Amongst the apps is the Opera store. Here are some things, also mostly rubbish, that can be added to the Sony. A few are actually interesting. There are two that make it possible to view external playlists on the Sony. One is called OTT Player, the other SS IPTV.

Finally, there is the built-in ‘browser’ . I put it in quotes because it is without question the absolute worst browser I have ever seen. Apart from the unhandiness of the controls, it mainly works only to display Sony advertising. For anything else it repeatedly freezes and even when it doesn’t it takes forever to load anything. So far I have not succeeded in getting a single video to play on it.

All of this has a surprisingly amateurish look and feel. The browser is simply hopeless but I thought I might at least be able to view some external playlists through one of the players mentioned above. My intention was to make my own playlists with legal content if I could get it to work. I did try a range of pirate lists at first (for testing purposes only) as well as a couple of legitimate ones I found after much searching (they aren’t easy to find). All give the same result: Playback is choppy, with constant buffering and it freezes or drops the connection after several seconds. This is on a LAN connection, not wi-fi.

I have a streaming computer next to the TV. All the same links work fine on it. As mentioned above, the built-in apps also work fine, so I don’t see how the problem can be related to my Internet connection.

At first I tried the OTT Player for the external links. After experiencing the playback problems, I looked for something else and found SS IPTV but had identical issues with that. These are the only two players in the Opera Store that can be used with the Sony.

So is this TV just a pile of crap? I know there are other ways to accomplish what I want, but I would like to understand the problems I have encountered. I actually bought the Sony as a dumb monitor, and it works fine for that. At the time, reviews indicated that it had the best picture quality for the price and that is what I wanted. In that regard it hasn’t disappointed, but it is also supposed to be a ‘smart’ TV and in that regard it seems pretty useless to me. Can anyone offer any enlightenment as to why internal apps stream fine, but anything else, even the built-in browser, constantly chokes? Is anyone else actually able to stream external content on this model? The one I have is the KDL W670.

I've also got an opera based Sony TV and can confirm quality of apps is pretty crap.

Often have to Chromecast Netflix when the internal app stops functioning (black screen or visual artifacts/stuttering) on any newer TV show.

It occasionally gets incredibly laggy switching inputs and I have to factory reset every few months when it stops outputting sound over HDMI and only a factory reset seems to bring that back.

It has been said for years - smart TV's aren't smart.

The new Android sets are moving in the right direction, but they're still not the whole package. What's more, with a firmware updates comes improvements... but also issues. Ask anyone in the UK who owns a recent LG TV and utilises HDBaseT...

Most Custom Installers / switched on types turn off any smarts and auto-updates at the very first opportunity - then strap on a smart streaming box of their choice. Even if the box fails or gets a crippling update, replacing it is super cheap and easy. Replacing a TV or rolling back firmware... not so much.

I would never buy a TV for it's "smart" features as in my experience they're very rarely smart and usually quite dumb.

I've got a Sony Bravia TV (an earlier version that yours I suspect) and it works great as a display (it's for a built-in browser but no apps). My Sony Bluray player, which I bought a few years after the TV, does have the apps (including the Opera store). My favourite app is the fireplace one laughing

If I want to do anything "smart" then I do it through either my Chromecast or Raspberry Pi (runs Kodi).

The issue I have with that, is now you need to operate a different GUI for each device... in this day and age, we still have to select input source, how 1980's is that?

A single gui that encompasses multiple devices is to this date beyond the capability of engineers who can build such amazing hardware but forget about the software.

I'm a bit like MurrayM. My Bravia is a 2011 model. I gave up on its 'smart' features shortly after its boxing Day sale purchase. Fortunately I have a Chromecast and Amazon Fire TV stick to take care of 'smart' stuff these days. Although it isn't really smart stuff - it's just a collection of apps. I tend to believe smarts are better off out of the TV as external devices seem to have a much longer shelf life in terms of updates.

I had an earlier Sony Bravia and from a smart perspective, it was indeed crap. The only way to get some value from those sets is to use an external STB such as a raspberry pi or some other solution. Do this and you will add some useful life into your set and not have to waste time trying to work out that so-called "smart" was not quite so "smart" when it came to the earlier model Sony's, LG's and Panasonics. The Samsung TV's led the pack for a number of years, but even their earlier models are struggling now.

My Bravia now sits in my office with a raspberry pi hanging off it, with UK and American news (or sports channels) streaming through during office hours. The Raspberry Pi was the cheapest and best way to extend it's useful life, especially as the world has moved towards HD streaming content.

I get what you guys are saying but would still like to know if anyone has been able to stream external links successfully on this model. I understand that all problems are solved with a STB. I would like to understand what it is about the Sony that makes it so hopeless.

They have gradually turned off features of these TVs overtime. For examaple YouTube was disabled several years ago. I would have returned mine if those features were essential for its use, but you can buy a chromecast that will work better than any of the smart features on these older models. The really annoying thing is that you had to buy an expensive wireless adapter to use these features, as generic ones wouldn't work, unless you wired it into your router. . So glad I didn't buy one. So essentially these TVs are just dumb TVs days, although they do have a Freeview tuner built in.

Mine doesn't even have that. It's just an analogue tuner.

The problems I see are:

1) Unless you go Veon, you simply can't buy a TV that isn't 'Smart' these days.  The vibe I get from the Android TV Sony is that it's an Android Tablet, that also has an app called Live TV.

2) The Android component of Android TV is relatively useless because the damn TV doesn't have a touchscreen, so most of the apps you want (Sky Go for example) just aren't even available via the App Store.

So, you end up having to side load these, and for most people that's just way to advanced to get going.

So, I think you're back to getting a TV box and feeding the TV that way.  And as an aside, the 4K content requires your receiver to be 4K compliant, or offer 4K pass through, so expect to spend money all round.

It doesn't even list my model, which doesn't impress me much after only four years. Yes, I should have looked into this sooner if I thought it was something that might interest me, but I guess my takeaway is that if Sony can't be bothered supporting their own products, then I can't be bothered buying another one from them. Fortunately there is plenty of choice.

What model is it? Sony have had Digital freeview tuners in them for many years, since at least 2008-9.

It is a KDL W670 50 inch. I never looked closely at the tuner because I didn't care but it says analogue on the remote and I get snow when I switch to it. Doesn't seem very digital to me. I bought it from Noel Leeming. It was discounted. Maybe they sold me a (very) old model. Like I said, I didn't care at the time. I just wanted something with HDMI input.
