Howdy all,

Are there any legal and HD streaming services available for the upcoming cricket season? I refuse to pay for fanpass now that it is stupid expensive and Willow TV now seems to be only available via cable/TV subscriptions in USA.

Surely there must be another option available?

Thanks,

Scott.

Legal in NZ is fanpass or sky from my understanding.  If you don't want to pay / "refuse to pay" for the legal rights to watch it in NZ then don't watch it.

Willow TV works fine via Sling TV which I use via Getflix DNS service. There is also http://www.crickethd.net/ which works great as well.

NBR had an opinion on this done (which is behind their paywall). The short answer was that it's simply legal parallel importing, as long as you are paying for it from services like Willow TV (for cricket) or RugbyPass for rugby. Parallel importing is fine according to our copyright act (at least according to this NBR article).

Willow via Sling looks like a good option, but I see they don't have the NZ stuff listed on their site.

When I said legit, I meant a pay for use service, not a dodgy rebroadcast full or ads and rubbish etc. I refuse to pay for fan pass due to its ridiculously high price... its cheaper to get full sky set top box service than it is for just fan pass.

I have no moral issue bypassing geo blocking etc., don't judge me... I'm just a huge cricket fan looking for a cost effective reliable HD service.

Parallel importing is normally physical goods.  Now so much for viewing rights.  Sure people will always find ways around things to either not pay or get it cheaper but asking on ways to side step rights holders on a public board is not really the best of ideas.

I agree with you on the last sentence but I'll take the lawyers advice on the first two.

There is no case law on whether parallel importing extends to digital goods in NZ - so the NBR article is simply one legal opinion, I'm pretty sure that SKY TV will have a different legal view....

"Global mode" disappeared from NZ ISPs after the Media crowd told them they would sue them over similar issues,

What is certain is that it will violate the T&Cs and the rights agreement  of the overseas site that has legal streaming rights to the content..

Now the question of whether the liability rests with the streaming site, the VPN provider or the end user is one only a court can determine...

Anyone care to stand up and let themselves become a test case :)

How genuine / trustworthy is crickethd? Has anyone here used it before?

Colleague uses it all the time. It's 720P HD in the web browser and there are no ad's. It's a legit service. I have seen the PQ and it's good.

What's the difference? Why should they be treated differently?

Because  the legislation to allow it was written in 1998, so did not in envisage things such as streaming.

The wording and language used is specific to objects,  so  it is unclear whether the intent of the act was to allow them,

A court decision is needed to determine how an old law applies to a new thing...

Do I need to fiddle with geo-unblocking crap to watch CricketHD?

Or will it just work, pay and display?  Does it work with Chromecast?

I also don't want to pay Sky their new ripoff prices - we happily paid for Fanpass last year but with the massive price hike they can stick that up their jacksee.

(Happily ignoring any "but it's not legal" mouth foamers)

Yeah, well, it's not illegal either. And happily in NZ we don't need laws to be passed to allow people to do things.
