Hi Geekers,

I received my Roku Ultra from Amazon! Only two weeks shipping!

I set up an account using NZ details but I cannot any apps using the roku app browser. Also can't do voice search for some reason.

1. What was the best way to set up a roku account?

2. What is your current app library look like, plex, netflix. any that you recommend?

3. The best way to stream media from an online server? plex can be a bit expensive using an online cloud based solution since it requires more processing power to handle the streams.

4. Is there a way to add a online network location using http?

Thanks

I picked up a $50 older AMD X4 850 machine to use for a Plex server. Threw in a GTX560 from a mate for free.
Should run 1080P perfectly!

When I had a Roku I was using the USA streaming services with a DNS unblocker. I changed it out for a western digital TV cause I could set the DNS on the device itself :)

Roku responded nicely and the remote was good.

You need to setup with a USA DNS Proxy platform to setup the Roku, as you need to trick it into believing its in the USA before you can use Netflix etc. This trickery needs to be inplace to setup the Roku account also.

Once its setup, you can stop using the DNS proxy's and use NZ Netflix.

I use Netflix, Hulu and Plex on mine. Works really well but considering changing to AppleTV to get the local NZ apps.

I can use netflix and plex using the current account, but I have never used plex before and some advice would be great.

Or uk.  There's a lot of good stuff if the roku is set up as UK rather than US - and the UKs channels - BBC/ITV/Channel 4 etc, don't have the same - YOU MUST HAVE CABLE SUBSCRIPTION - restrictions that a lot of the us ones do.  Unfortunately it's not easy to switch, it does require a factory reset.  But with a US and UK roku account (use seperate email addresses) it's doable.

In the uk, you also get the netflix app, plex, youtube etc.

Oh as you've figured out, yes you can have a nz account as well, but then you don't get a lot of the overseas stuff.  Basically when creating the account you needs to be using a dns service or a vpn in the country you want.

I use Netflix, Vudu, Amazon Prime and Hulu.

About to cancel Netflix as all the stuff I watch seems to be on Hulu and Netflix seems to have a lot of older series and less current stuff. No reason to keep sending them money for nothing. Might knock Amazon Prime on the head - don't think I'm justifying it.

I'm using getflix for the DNS, and it's configured on the router so any device in the home network uses it. I also use noip for dynamic dns - without it I needed to constantly refresh the getflix but now it uses a little  noip windows service to keep the ip recognised.

As others have said, it's a bit annoying that there are no Roku channels (i.e. apps) for local TV.

Have a look in the private forums (just added you). You'll need to use a DNS provider that is mentioned quite a bit in there and enable Roku under it.

You'll find it at the very bottom of the forums link above.

I'd be interested in that - could you add me in to please?

US setup here.

I connected with a guy in the states and he created a Verizon login for me so that unlocked all the US channels that I need.
