I just signed up for the free version of USTVnow. I am not particularly a fan of American TV but I lived there for many years so am familiar with the FTA networks.

I don't know if I will actually watch this much but I am impressed with the service. Joining was a breeze, no BS or hidden crap, and I can easily expand my plan to a paid option if I want to. All I needed was my name, email and a password. The service works well and is easy to access.

What I like about this is it could be a model for the future. Anyone who wants to anywhere in the world can sign up, no crap about copyright or geo-blocking. It is a good model and the way things should go. I hope others follow this example. Maybe before long we can be free of all the ridiculous regional crap. Of course premium services should be paid for, but this is definitely the way FTA should go. Kudos to the Americans for coming up with this.

Hmmm. It seems as dodgy as it comes. From their FAQ "USTVNow is intended as a free service exclusively for Americans living overseas."

That sounds like a weasel statement.

No information about the company or anything else - Actually, it seems to be a dutch company "DutchPhone".

So, yes, not "American".

It never even occurred to me to think that there might be anything dodgy about this. Maybe I am just naive. Anyway, I looked into it a little further but I can find nothing to suggest it is dirty. At worst, it may be in a grey area but even the official Kodi site seems to think it is okay. I hope it is, only because I think this is the direction things should go, but if it isn't I'm not too bothered because I don't expect to make much use of it. Anyway, I found it in the official Kodi add-on repository and they are pretty strict about that kind of thing.

I used the free version a few years ago. It's been around for ages at this point. The free version is nice but the overall service seems to have been basically abandoned. There haven't been new channels and the ones that exist are in 4:3. Meanwhile, I get a new email from them every few months in broken English offering some new service that's supposedly better. They seem dodgy, but the service seems to work for the most part.

They aren't the cheapest though and there are other similar grey area streaming options which offer a lot more for what you pay.

I used to subscribe years ago - the Roku app was decent but to be honest there are such better alternatives like DirecTV Now and Sling TV.
