Hi Guys,

This is my first post here as I'm a *Ahem* Virgin at this and would like some help/advice.

We've just moved into a new place and the satellite aerial is in another room and I don't want to be trailing cables or drilling holes through the house as we are renting for 12 months.

As you know Netflix/Amazon/Lightbox are pretty rubbish and don't show many of the latest trending shows and I do miss catching up on regular tv too.

I'm looking at possibly an android box that streams through our wifi router but like I'd said before I'm a complete newby at this.

Ideally I'd like access to standard freeview channels, movies etc.

Any ideas & help would be gratefully received.

Cheers

I've got a Xiaomi MiBox which I got from Ali Express: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Global-Version-Xiaomi-MI-BOX-Streaming-Media-Player-Android-TV-6-0-Quad-Core-64Bit/32768535747.html

I've set up Kodi and the Freeview TV plugins that someone on here posted about.  It works fine for that and streams what you want.  I personally dont use it as I can get Freeview HD anyway. Did it as a "can I get this to work" (and it does).

Personally I like th MiBox. Its not the most powerful Android TV box out there. I have a 1080p TV and it works fine - it seems to be a little more hit and miss if youre pushing 4K through it.  For the price; I'd recommend it.  If you want a better Android TV experience then I'd go for a NVidia Shield - but you're gonna pay quite a bit more.

Basically any Andorid TV box you can install Kodi on should work.  Will post an update to this if/when I find the reference to the Freeview Plugins.

Edit:

I imagine it was this forum post I followed to set up Freeview on Kodi: https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=151&topicid=198716&page_no=21

I just went through all this. I'm using a US$30 box from Aliexpress on which I installed Kodi. It seems fine though I sometimes have some issues with buffering, but I think that is my Internet connection, not the box.

Android boxes come with their own remotes. They have an on-screen keyboard.

Or just get KORE - the smartphone control app.

Easier to 1-click on any err.. other media files you should have in the catalogue.
