Am idly think of getting some kind of family plan for music streaming - Spotify, Google Play Music / something else.

So, am wondering, any recommendations / comments ?

Also

- it seems that for Spotify members have to be at the same phyical address, therefore if one is at Uni he presumably won't qualify, being on a different IP or whatever. Play music just says family members, anyone know any requirements re physical address ?

- Google includes this Red thing - should I care ?

- Google is US$20.00pm. Is it really worth more than Netflix ?

I'm torn between Google and Spotify.  Currently have Spotify which works well with my amp as that has connect so don't need Android TV on for playing, but I find searching for playlists and actual albums difficult.  Google Red has more benefits, similar price, and I find an easier interface but in the house would require my TV/android TV on.

You should be able to try both on free trials?  Both have unlimited music streaming, but Google Red also has advert-less Youtube.

Worth noting is that Google Music is not supported by Vodafone Music pass so it will use data when out and about if on voda, spotify is included... I suspect Spark is the same too.

Hmm. Some interesting info thanks. Was thinking of maybe going for Spotify - think it works on our one and only Amazon Echo, whereas Google and Amazon don't get on. But Google seems to be a better overall package. Maybe the trials are indeed the best option.

- don't have an amp and am not on Vodafone (or Spark).

Spotify does have the "same address" thing built into the terms of service; there are plenty of complaints on the internets about people who have had their plan revoked by Spotify upon detecting someone "lives" somewhere else.  I don't know nor care if/how/when they check.

...

There is also the "Apple Music" option - the family plan there doesn't have any requirements around who constitutes a family or addresses (or even countries, as far as I can tell).  I'm still in the 3-month "free trial" period for Apple Music Family, but it seems to do what we want; Android client is available.  No web-based client for listening to music via a PC/Mac Browser - iTunes for PCs required to listen.  The actual music seems a little hit-and-miss for reasons I don't fully understand.  For example, the "Apple Music" album of Dave Dobbyn's "A Slice of Heaven: 40 Years of Hits" only seems to have half the tracks available here in NZ - presumably due to rights.  A little weird for a NZ artist, however!  (No comments on my choice of music, please!)

Be aware, however, the "owner" of the family plan does become liable for any/all purchases made by members of the family - all my (adult) son's purchases on his iTunes account now go to my credit-card, much to his amusement.

Thanks. Same address thing is a bit off-putting. Not much point (maybe) getting a family thing then the main user goes to uni and gets chucked off anyway.

.and will check out Apple Music. Thanks again.

Have a Spotify Family (Philippines account - $5NZ/month) and haven't had any problems sharing with friends. Let alone the fact that we're all magically in a different country.

So maybe its not such a big thing for Spotify after all. Looks like I'll end up flipping a coin...

Google play music comes with YouTube red which means no ads.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

In addition to ad-free YouTube, you also get the ability to download YouTube onto your device for offline watching.

So, in addition to Google Play music, which is as just good as Spotify, the YouTube benefits make it a no-brainer IMHO

I haven’t read the whole thread but I wanted to put my vote in for Apple Music. Have had the family plan since AM came out and myself, wife and two teenage kids use it. Works well for us and no complaints from the teenagers. They just put the price up to $23 pm but I’m okay with it for now. Should add that we are more often than not in different locations and no issues.

Times like this I begin to believe in the power of the monopoly...
