It’s nearly start of the rugby season , normally I resign up to sky on the cheap deals number but this year looking at alternatives . I had a look at sling TV but couldn’t find info that espn 3 will be showing the games this year at 20 us for the orange package would keep the kids happy as well or Rugbypass which is again 20 US or the other option is contact sky again . What is everybody doing this year for their rugby fix?

RugbyPass.com FTW! Annual subscription using REDDIT promo code cost me ~NZ$170 (less than $15/month).

Good quality service too.

I use Rugbypass too, with DNS4ME.

Is the reddit discount code “reddit”?

Is it possible to apply a discount to an existing sub, or would I have to leave and rejoin?

Last year with with rugbypass I renewed monthly and applied the reddit promo code every time. I used paypal and stop the auto renew, or you will pay full price. Got caught out 1 month when i forgot to stop it renewing. I think it gives you 25% off.

Firstly, quality is just about rock steady - mostly 720p full frame rate, but occasionally frame rate appears to drop a bit, and only very occasionally hangs for buffering.

Secondly, yes just about all All Blacks games - I pretty sure the ABs vs. Baabaas game on the northern tour was missed - but most certainly all others were available.

But also, all Super and Mitre 10 games are streamed and then available ondemand for at least three months, along with the English and French championships, and Six Nations, and I see the upcoming Brisbane 10s listed.

One thing to note: the games generally carry the host broadcaster's commentary. So, NZ games have Sky (boomfa!), Australia: Foxtel (Clarkey, Kearnsy, Marto, etc.)... It was really good having the Scottish and Welsh commentaries. Also, you generally just get the game feed without the pre and post match hype/analysis, and no ads!

I use DNS4ME too - it allows you to specifically choose which country to access RugbyPass (to align with your address in your RugbyPass account).

I use a Kodi addon developed by Matt Huisman (which I apparently can't link to! Google him though and definitely buy him a coffee if you use the addon!)

Once we had 20 mins of a match with the Argentinian commentary - surprisingly off putting!

A couple of times we’ve had the “not available in your location” screen and we’ve had to clear the cache (chrome win7) and swap to another server on DNS4ME.

One downside of RugbyPaas vs MkSky is that you can't live pause or delay start a game.  Correct me if I'm wrong.  So you either watch it live, or you watch it on demand later on, after it's completely finished - and I'm not sure what the delay is after the game until it is available on demand.

What we found was for games that started at 7:30 pm, we often started watching (uisng MySky) after dinner at say 8:30 pm, which also meant you could fast forward through half time, injury breaks etc.  I don't believe that's possible with RugbyPass.  Although once again I'm conflicted over whether that functionality is worth the extra cost ($90/month) for Sky.

I agree - I have to put my kids to bed which means I wouldn't get to see the start of the game (and possibly the end...). I tweeted them about it a few months ago and followed up yesterday. They responded with:

"it's a fix that's being worked on with the stream provider. It's not possible right now, but due to be available in 2-3 weeks".

Sounds like it may be a goer by the start of the season. It's what's holding me back at the moment.

So using a year off rugbypass plus a year of dns4me is about $260? Is this relatively easy to set up? I can see this being good for a few people I know that only have sky for rugby.

That'd be a clincher for me.  Will have to monitor it over the next few weeks.

FanPass is the piling steam of crap. There is a reason why it has more than 50% 1-star ratings in the Google Play Store. I bought the six month option in December, and am counting down the days until it ends (30 June). I'll be moving to Foxtel Now afterwards. Among other issues:

  • Two hour long plus outages last month (even the web site become unavailable), tried on both 2 degress and spark.
  • Chromecast regularly (usually once an hour) will magically jump back thirty minutes.
  • Chromecast occasionally (once every day or two) will tell me "this video is no longer available". The only way to fix this seems to be to close the app on your phone, and reboot the chromecast.
  • No popup channels (I knew this before I signed up, but it does mean most V8s will not be available, no Olympic coverage, and some other events)

I had Foxtel Now last year, and it worked without any issues. I haven't tried it using a PC, since I subscribed to it for the Chromecast support.

Not being able to pause would be a pain as well often don't get to watch the game until 8 or 830 after put the kids to bed, not worth 90 but may be worth sky deals page:)

What setup steps did you use to get Foxtel Now setup and working in NZ?
