My Chinese wife is over there spending time with her parents, but sadly, her father passed away last week. The plan we have in place is for when this happens, we bring the Mum here to live with us, she is happy about that. She doesn't speak English. Wife says that the Freeview channel here that she watches wont cut it, but we can get a Chinese tech to add something (she is not tech literate) to get access to many Chinese TV channels. I dont want a "tech" messing with our setup here, which is fibre, 12 rooms with a wall outlet holding an ethernet and boosted coax connection. Even though she said it doesnt need the huge dish that used to be the case.

So, I am preferring a VOD solution with a high WAF. I see that VOD is growing in China but that seems more to be international content for China, what I want is Chinese TV via VOD

If there are any asian members who can recommend solutions that will be great. If it was a dish, would that be dedicated to one room, or can it feed into ethernet to be available in more than one room?

re VOD, free or paid is fine, and legal

Where are you based?,

The number of Chinese freeview channels in Auckland seems to keep growing on an almost monthly basis

Condolences on your loss. I'm not Asian and I don't have expert knowledge, but you might want to look at IPTV services in the region. There seems to be a lot of Chinese content from China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and even Thailand. Many paid IPTV services are shady at best and I have never investigated this in detail, but there may be some legitimate ones, also selling Android boxes with subscriptions. I'm not sure what the geographic requirements for these are, if any, but again it might be worth looking into. This would be a hell of lot easier than messing with satellite dishes and the like. Maybe there is some kind of legal overseas subscription available from a legitimate IPTV provider. There certainly are plenty of Chinese overseas. Just try some Google searches for IPTV Chinese.

Christchurch

I assume there is only one here, news, drama etc. I can check later though if there are any more, she may not have noticed them as the Panny Freeview box is only used by the wife

Thank you. Chinese IPTV gives a much better result than my Chinese VOD search. Kylin TV looks interesting, pay tv, an iPad app which is surprising (AppleTV app would be perfect). So plenty for me to look into, appreciated

Not sure what there is to be afraid of with a foreign cheap android TV box?

Just segment it from the rest of your LAN, sounds like your network set up allows for it.

No, not worried about a cheap foreign Android box, more about a foreign tech setting up a Satellite or wiring that might mess up the rest, such as using this plug for his stuff, rerouting etc.  Going VOD/IPTV and using a foreign STB would be a good solution, WAF wise

There are definitely methods other than settling for a dish. My old folk use this app on his tablet to watch Chinese channels. I have no clue what selection of channels are on it, whether they're quality channels, junk, etc. But he seems happy with it and that's all that really matters to me. He also has a small Xiaomi set-top box which he bought while visiting relatives which lets him watch a Chinese TVNZ ondemand equivalent type service with a DNS switcher.

There's definitely plenty of services but I think the language barrier is going to be a big problem when you're doing your research. The app I linked above isn't even available on Google Play anymore and has to be sideloaded unless your device has a Chinese app store (HiApp, others)
