Anyone seen these paid ads on the NZ Herald.  And used it here in NZ?

Sounds too good to be true?

Free netflix, free sky?

Haven’t seen it but it doesn’t sound correct ,
there’s no way you can use an antenna to get free sky( and you don’t need one for Netflix;-)

Well, I don't believe the ad, my BF does, I am just asking here to prove to him that it is not what he thinks it is.

I've sent him links to Tom's guide which reviewed it.  But I told him, no way to get free sky and free netflix.

This only pics up free channels.  But if he wants to spend his money and buy it and still get the same free view channels by all means he can.

Just looks like an indoor aerial to me .
I couldn’t get your link to work but the website is carefully worded to say ‘ it picks up all the channels”
But so does any other properly designed Antenna ;-)

It may be worth reading the other thread that popped up about those ads: https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=106&topicid=233849

There's a similar product advertised on Stuff too, and they've localised it based on your IP grouping - so for example it claims to work in Christchurch.

Media must be getting desperate for revenue to accept spam ads

+This, its a regular internal aerial,

the marketing spin is a result of a significant portion of the US population not being aware of FTA TV

"Almost a third of Americans (29%) are unaware local TV is available free, according to a June survey by the National Association of Broadcasters, an industry trade group."

Americans must be taking stupid pills. How can anyone not know that broadcast television exists? As in, broadcast = signal transmitted over the air through an antenna?  Age is no excuse. Don't they talk to their parents, their grandparents? Cable is a relatively recent development and it is by no means universal. These indoor antennas are essentially a scam because of the way they are being promoted. They are just a modern version of the old rabbit ears people often had on top of their 'portable' TVs.

This works after a fashion in America because there are lots of OTA broadcasters there clustered closely together in the big cities. So if someone puts an indoor antenna (or a piece of wire) into their RF input, they will probably be able to receive a number of local channels, but also the major networks like ABC, NBC and CBS. Whee, just like the good old days.

Here in godzone the scam is less impressive because we have fewer OTA channels, worse reception for many places, and better alternatives anyway. These internal antennas, and any other means of reception, will only receive the regular UHF Freeview broadcasts, and only if they are within range of a broadcast tower. So you might be able to get some or even all of the Freeview channels, and maybe even a local regional one, but unless you are close to the tower, you will probably still need an external antenna. If you can't get adequate reception even with that, which will be the case in many places, especially outside of major towns, the only alternatives are a Sky-style satellite dish or streaming via the Internet, assuming you have an adequate broadband connection. But even those will not allow you to receive Sky, Netflix, or any other commercial service without a paid subscription. Any suggestions to the contrary are simply wrong. And if you want Sky, you will still need a dish. You can't receive it via any antenna.

Stuff have been notorious for spam ads for years. You must've been under a rock or something? :D
