A few Amazon Prime questions

1 - There are some shows on Amazon Prime that I am very much interested in: Counterpart, Jack Ryan, A Very English Scandal, The Man in the High Castle, to name a short list few.

a - These shows get a really good IMDb rating and write ups. What are forums members views on them from those that have watched these shows ?

2 - The trouble is to use my  Chromecast Ultra I have to install the Google Chrome browser on my iPad which I really do not want to do and besides I believe that this set up does not play well together??

a - Do they or don't they play well together ?

b - Is this the only way to watch Amazon Prime via my Chromcast Ultra ?

3 - I will eventually buy an Apple TV for which there is a NZ Amazon Prime App The problem here is that the present Gen 5 (4k) model was released in Sept 2017 which is 493 days ago with an overall average update cycle of 589 days so we are due for a whole product update not just the tvOS.

a - Do I bite the bullet and buy the present Apple TV Gen 5 (4K) now then upgrade to Gen 6 on release and then try and sell Gen 5 at that time ?

4 - Amazon Prime costings:

a - Prime Video with a 7 day free trial then at USD$2.99 per month for the first six months. Price reverts to USD$5.99 per month after the first 6 months

b - Prime Package with 30 day free trail then at USD$12.99 per month (note: I do buy a lot of Kindle ebooks)

Thanks

Does the Amazon video iOS app support casting to Chromecast?

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/amazon-prime-video/id545519333?mt=8

Or is that only available on the Android version.

At 2.99US it's worth just trying and seeing what you think rather than worry about others feedback. It's not a fixed term so if it's not your thing you can end it. You also get some extra value in a Twitch Prime sub free each month if that interests you($4.99 value).

Counterpart is probably only season 1, it's up to s02e06 on Starz in the US right now and might not get s02 for a while. Worth watching.

Jack Ryan is watchable but not memorable.

The Man in the High Castle is love/hate, interesting concept but I didn't follow it past season 1.

Theres also shows like Goliath, Bosch and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel which people rave about, a good selection of older films too compared to Netflix ANZ.

My apple tv gen3 had the amazon prime app added to it after an upgrade. It worked with dns4me settings for usa content. I did have to connect to the web first with netflix then close and then start prime, otherwise it wouldn't connect. Stopped my yearly when the price went up as I had watched most of what I wanted. Thinking of joining to NZ Prime video for the new shows added lately.

Short answer is NO as I stated above. The long answer is YES, there are work a round's and caveats. Have a read here: Watch Amazon Video on your Chromecast. But that is not a very clean and tidy way to do it not like it is with Netflix or Youtube etc

Do you get the full US catalog as you do with the full Prime package or only the NZ one??

Here is an interesting wrinkle with Amazon Prime Video. Some of their, Amazons, content is from 3rd party channels. e.g. HBO, Starz, Showtime, to name three. These are called "Amazon Prime Channel Subscriptions" To access these channels you have to pay them, the 3rd party, a subscription as well as your Amazon Prime subscription. So for me to watch Counterpart on Amazon Prime Video I also have to take out a Starz channel subscription which is a 7 day free trial then USD$8.99 per month.

From what I can see after a quick perusal of the Starz channel, Counterpart is the only one I am interested in. Note that USA members ONLY have the option to buy episodes or seasons from Amazon Prime. I suppose I could take out the Amazon Prime 30 day free trail PLUS take out the Starz Channel 7 day free trial and binge watch season 1 all 10 episodes (season 2 only has 6 episodes at the moment).

Also these 3rd party channel offerings are not appearing in the iPhone/iPad iOS Prime Video app. They only appear in desktop/laptop browser access to Amazon Prime Video. Which means I can only view Counterpart by AirPlaying from my mac to an AppleTV device over my home WiFi network. Unless of course you can see these Amazon Prime Channel Subscriptions on the Amazon Prime Video app for Apple TV ? Perhaps a forum member who has Amazon Prime via an Apple TV could answer that question ?

While I have Chromecasts all over the place, I watch all Amazon Prime content (and Netflix) with a Amazon Firestick 4K. That works very well and is certainly easier than firing it up on a phone and then casting.

I have watched Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Pluto and a few others with no problem using a US proxy server. And Netflix is usually in DD+, Amazon also and Hulu for its own shows (not broadcast TV series for some reason)
