Its been an open secret in the NZ film industry for the past few months that Amazon have been in town for its lord of the rings show. The long standing rumor was finally confirmed today by Amazon. The LOTR show will film in and around Auckland in the coming months.

Amazon Studios will begin filming its Lord of the Rings television show in Auckland.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by Amazon Studios after months of discussions with Government and Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) and the New Zealand Film Commission.

Filming will begin in the coming months at a range of sites around the Auckland region, but ATEED said the exact sites were still under discussion.

The series is expected to premiere in 2021.

Amazon Studios said pre-production had started, and production on the series would begin later.

Showrunners and executive producers J.D Payne and Patrick McKay said "as we searched for the location in which we could bring to life the primordial beauty of the Second Age of Middle Earth, we knew we needed to find somewhere majestic, with pristine coasts, forests, and mountains, that also is a home to world-class sets, studios, and highly skilled and experienced craftspeople and other staff".

"And we're happy that we are now able to officially confirm New Zealand as our home for our series based on stories from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings."

"We are grateful to the people and the government of New Zealand and especially Auckland for supporting us during this pre-production phase.

"The abundant measure of Kiwi hospitality with which they have welcomed us has already made us feel right at home, and we are looking forward to deepening our partnership in the years to come."

Economic Development Minister Phil Twyford said New Zealand's selection as the base of the show's production ahead of other countries showed how far the country had come as a player in the highly competitive global screen industry.

"This is a sought after production and fantastic news for New Zealand's screen sector and our economy," Twyford said.

"The new Lord of the Rings series, along with other significant screen projects underway or in development, provides New Zealand with a global stage to demonstrate our skills, innovation and outstanding natural beauty.

"We can be proud of New Zealand's talent in the screen sector and what this industry delivers to our economy."

I'm guessing they will get the regular 20% rebate, + probably the addition 5% uplift available

It'll be interesting to see how it turns out. I loved (for the most part) Jackson's LotR, but didn't enjoy at all the three Hobbit movies.

Yea I'm curious to see what middle earth can look like without Peter Jackson. He did a great job but it will be good to see someone else have a go. Still sad we didn't get Del Toro's Hobbit.

Press release from the NZ Government:

The New Zealand Government will no longer proceed with part of the deal to support the Lord of the Rings TV Series, following the decision by Amazon Studios to shift production of future seasons to the United Kingdom.

Economic Development Minister Stuart Nash said he was disappointed by the decision.

“The government was informed of the decision yesterday,” Stuart Nash said.

“Amazon Studios advised that post-production work on Season One will continue in New Zealand till June 2022. However Season Two will be filmed in the UK as part of a strategy by the studio to expand its production space and consolidate its footprint in the UK.

“I am enormously proud of the New Zealand screen sector. The Amazon Studios’ decision in no way reflects the capabilities of our local film industry or the talents of the people who work in it. This is a multi-national company that has made a commercial choice.

“With Season One, the New Zealand screen sector has proven its reputation for offering a world-class workforce, globally competitive sound stages and post-production facilities, and a safe destination with outstanding scenery and friendly and welcoming people.

“The previously agreed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Amazon Studios will no longer proceed in its current form. The five percent incentive previously offered on top of the standard 20 percent rebate for all international film productions is withdrawn.

“As with every other international production, Amazon Studios is eligible for a 20 per cent rebate on its qualifying production expenditure in this country, under the terms of the International Screen Production Grant.

“It is estimated that Amazon Studios’ qualifying local expenditure totals around NZD $663.74 million so it could potentially be eligible for a NZD $132 million rebate under the 20 percent rule.

“The international film sector is incredibly competitive and highly mobile. We have no regrets about giving this production our best shot with government support. However we are disappointed for the local screen industry. Work will continue across government on ways to keep supporting the sector,” Stuart Nash said.

Screen industry secures landmark project
HON STUART NASH
Economic and Regional Development, Tourism

Economic and Regional Development Minister Stuart Nash says a landmark deal has been agreed with Amazon for The Lord of the Rings TV series, currently being filmed in New Zealand.

Mr Nash says the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) secures multi-year economic and tourism benefits to New Zealand, outside the screen production itself.

“The agreement with Amazon not only creates an enduring legacy for our screen industry, it generates local jobs and creates work for local businesses,” Mr Nash says.

Close friends have a talented daughter who is currently working on the editing of S.1 here in Auckland. Sounds like her job will run through to about mid-22 then it's over. Sad for her.

That's the way it works, AFAIUI.

If you want stable, year on year employment, the film/TV industry is not set up for you. It looks like many productions are made by companies set up specifically for each production and folded afterwards.

It's all very short term and during that term, often flat out.

Well Bezos apparently did say he wanted something more like 'Game of Thrones'.
Which is why you choose Lord of Rings in first place ?
So with this move they will be closer to same filming locations ?

Saves a lot on CGI castles if you can film in and around real ones, want a derelict one, they have those aplenty.

In the end it will be the $ subsidies available playing off UK vs Ireland, maybe Europe as well.
Irish double Dutch sandwich tax breaks or whatever they call it these days.
Even in UK no doubt there is a bit of Welsh, Scottish, English competition for locations and spending.

Zena, Hercules etc did suffer from the same black sand beaches and dunes after a while.
