Where art thou, 4K?

I contacted Google support today who tell me that the reason that I cannot find a single 4K movie in NZ's Play Store is because of the studios decision not publishing here in 4K on the platform (or words to that effect). I even waited while the rep asked a "specialist" who said the same thing. It is up to the studios. Yet, Apple have been selling 4K (and Dolby Atmos) for quite a while! What gives?

Something doesn't add up. Why would studios would not sell in 4K here when they do in other regions? And I don't believe that an exec looked at a spreadsheet for 4K sales in NZ and didn't notice that there were zero 4K sales.

Have I missed something? Are there actually 4K videos for sale in NZ's Play Store and I didn't see them?

For the same reason that the Google exec didn’t notice there were no Pixel sales, or Google Home / Nest sales. Or use of native Google Assistant. We are are a South Pacific Nation that doesn’t matter, unless you want to test something like a Project Loon.

And it's not just Google. I just picked up a Blu-ray only to find that the NZ version has 25% of the picture cut off to make it fit a 16:9 TV, while the US Blu-ray contains the whole thing. Sigh.

My UltraViolet collection was transferred to Google Play. I can still access them through You Tube. Most were free codes from Blu-rays that I bought, so I decided to let them go. I need to watch my movies in 4K HDR and Atmos where possible.

Google Play is the worst movie streaming service IMO.

I think that Neon would hold that title.  No DD 5.1 only stereo and  archaic rental system.

I believe Google Play gets shut down soon in favour of YouTube.

Maybe some exec needs to realise that it's 2020!

A problem with a lot of this is there are consumers that want the highest quality but don't want to pay for it. Some who are prepared to pay for it but their numbers are not big enough to generate a reasonable return on investment.

Apple seem to have no problem offering 4K and Dolby Atmos from the same studios in NZ, at a much cheaper price often than the Play Store.

Then there's the rumours that Google are making a new Chromecast with remote to replace the Chromecast Ultra. What would be the point?

Appletv has appeared on most smart TVs in recent weeks, even my 2018 LG, so no need to purchase an actual Appletv to access the Apple library.

I'm not in the market for a new tv currently, i.e. spending $1000's. I read that an app is coming to Xbox at some stage, which I already own. Alternatively wait for the next Apple TV since the current model is 3 years old.
