I am on a WISP and my international streaming quality is variable, though usually okay. This weekend it seems to have completely gone to hell and I am wondering if others are also seeing this. Europe seems to be particularly bad, Australia also less good, USA maybe a little better. Am I the only one seeing this? My speed tests to local servers are always good.

AO Net. Not yet. I was trying to get more insight first. Most networking stuff is over my head but if I run speedtests to NZ servers everything is peachy keen, but as soon as I change to a European server it drops to about 300 ms ping and less then 1 mbps down. No wonder I am having problems.

Talk to your ISP first

Okay I will do that. I remember they said something in the past about only investigating speed issues with their own DNS servers, which I don't use because I rely on DNS4ME for overseas streaming, which makes up almost all of the content I consume. I don't know how much that might affect my issue. Do the DNS servers affect streaming speed? I though they only came into play when establishing the connection.

Yes. It can.

Depending on content source.

Inbound queries to the destination service or cdn/distribution networks may reverse check the DNS asking the lookup. IP geo located. And reply with server details/IP optimized for the region of the inbound.

Query via usa. Be pointed to a usa server. Query via nz, get a nz or au server.

Is why for the RWC and spark sport, it was optimal to use local dns and get content from local cache

Changing to ISP, flushing and re-checking rules that out.

Reach out to your provider, AONet is normally pretty good.

I've got a few friends who sit on his gear, i haven't heard a single complaint.

300ms to europe isn't too bad.

I will get in touch with them. I just want to be sure I know what I am complaining about.

It's really windy, I bet some of your bits arrived at your neighbors!

Better to report a problem and ask for help than complain. The different mindset will mean they want to help you rather than get rid of you.

Which European speedtest servers were you trying?

You need to inquire with your ISP well before you seek support from a forum such as Geekzone.  Each ISP has different vagarities in terms of the way their interconnects and transit agreements work, so you and your neighbour, whilst you may share last-mile infrastructure, can have entirely different experiences through a multitude of factors.

I went to Ookla, clicked on other servers, did a couple searches on areas I was having trouble with. One was Switzerland, where Zattoo is located. The test server was iway AG in Zurich. It gave me a download speed of less than 1 mbps. I also tried another server from the list and got about the same. I also checked London and Sydney. I don't remember which servers now. London was about the same, Sydney a little better but not much. I did some other tests but did not understand the results. A lot of this is over my head. Same with tracert.

Just to add: I want to try a couple more things before contacting my ISP, mainly clearing my cache, changing the DNS to the ISP default, and seeing if I get a different result with a VPN. This may take a couple days because of other obligations with visiting family. I will post any results.
