An hour or so ago, for no apparent reason, my download speeds plummeted to as little as 0.5 Mbps, and are now averaging around 6 or 7 Mbps. This is way below my normal value of nearly always just under 30 Mbps. Upload speeds are 'normal' at about 10 Mbps. Can anyone tell me if this is also happening to them or is it likely to be specific to my WISP? I have checked the fault section and it says there are no known issues.

how are you testing? have your reset (power cycled) everything? have you tried a different device for your testing?

what did the ISP say when you contacted them about it?

Yes I power reset everything. I am having the same issue on different machines with different LAN connections to the router. I also power reset the router. I haven't contacted the ISP yet because I was trying to get more information on the fault first. That will be my next step.

i suspect if you have reset everything and its happening via Ethernet on multiple devices then its an ISP problem

It seems to be. I tried ringing them and got a voicemail. There was something about an outage somewhere but the message was very garbled. They said no-one was available to come to the phone. I will just have to wait and see if it improves. Thanks for your feedback.

It was something local. Everything is back to normal. Better than ever.

You don't mention which WISP you are using, so it's harder for people to help.

It was AO Net but I was mainly wondering if people on big ISPs like 2 degrees and Spark were having issues as a point of comparison. I was just trying to rule out what I could and I couldn't get information from AO Net at that moment. As it turns out, the issue was with them so local, and it has now been fixed.

My internet speeds in the toilet are a solid 500Mbps up/down.

Have you tried moving your router/access point closer to the bog?

My ISP has common infrastructure to AONet; they had an outage this date caused by an upstream issue (not their own fault) which took several hours to resolve. Kinda highlights the need to talk to your own ISP if you have an outage!

I would have loved to but they didn't answer the phone and they weren't responding to email. Do you suggest smoke signals?

Edit: I also checked their site several times for outages and it reported no issues. When that happens, it can be useful to ask others what their experience is. Isn't that what Geekzone is for?

Looks like they peer upstream with Datacentre220 & Vocus

if one went down I would assume it would have taken an alternate path

I suggest voting with your feet if the service you get from your ISP doesn't meet your expectations.

Great if you are part of the urban elite and can choose from a dozen providers. We have less choice in the countryside. In any case, I wasn't complaining, just asking for information.
