Kia ora,

Partner appeared on the AM show this morning and I thought I would try to download the actual content off Brightcove for her records.

Streaming and downloading isn't an issue but noticed that the quality is very very low.

Anyone know why the quality streamed is so low? Most people should have 4G/Fibre nowadays so not sure why the chosen quality is so low.

Here is the page/video in question: https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/lifestyle/2021/05/how-does-lego-help-children.html

Lastly, I also noticed that it's buffering a lot on my Fibre connection which is kind of weird too.

Far as I am aware it's auto adaptive based on connection and capabilities. (and DNS setting)

If you are viewing from a browser, console tools can tell you the media bitrates. And may even allow over-riding.

Try our friendly three addin on Kilo Oscar Delta India for comparison? ;) That will give option to use the max source rate.

Their streams are low resolution and low bit-rate.

Just checked the TV3 stream and it is 1024x576, Bravo is also the same.

Crazy thing is EdgeTV and Breeze TV are better quality at 720p and a far higher bitrate

TVNZ generally uses 720p on their live streams, and MaoriTV uses 1080p

Wonder why the decision was made to stream at such a low resolution/bitrate.

It's not like they have huge amount of traffic (like CNN/BBC) and need manage traffic costs.

I imagine that Discovery will move the former Mediaworks TV channels onto a global platform at some stage in the near future. Hopefully that will result in an improvement across the entire viewing experience.

Same reason all news gathering  video on TV3 news is in SD. They like being cheap and don't care.

Choice and HDTV are already part of Discovery and they also use 1024x576

TV3's on demand streams are also relatively low bitrate. The Kodi add on is a great way to confirm their values.

Here's the m3u8 of the segment I think you're after from their 1024x576 live streaming which seems reasonable quality.  Copy and paste text as .m3u8 and you can open (and save?) in VLC or something else.

It might look reasonable on a phone/tablet, but it looks incredibly soft running full screen on my desktop monitor.

Believe it or not, I got better quality by recording it off my TV with my iPhone.
