Hope I have put this in the right section, apologies if not.

Essentially I want to black adverts when watching free to air TV channels (wherever they are from).

I think I use adblockplus browser on my phone, which like the extension on a desktop but is a browser in its self.

Im wondering if that would work for the TV adverts? You can see them in the show, usually a yellow line or similar, maybe 6 or so in a 50min show.

Thanks for any constructive help.

I was thinking of asking something myself, I am getting annoyed with adds in YouTube and Facebook media.

I was going to ask if Pi Hole takes care of these?

youtube is pretty easy, just install adblock as an extension if using google, will block almost everything on the net for you, occasionally some sites you will need to pause it, ie ones you want to use like this site for example. but it wont block the adverts built into the streaming TV adverts. Ive not lookked at pi hole before.

I use Adguard (similar to Pi-Hole) but that doesn't block ads in Youtube or the TV streaming apps, at least not on my apple tv.

It doesn't really bother me as most of the ads you can just skip or they only play 1 or 2, not like normal TV where ad breaks seem to go for 3-4 minutes.

$12.99 per month and you get Google Play Music. YouTube Red Originals as well. YTRO has not delivered much movie or tv content since long before covid tho. Gah.

The place YouTube ads really annoy me is at work. The company pays for Google Apps and you'd think there would be some ad suppression option on YouTube in return for that spend.

To everyone. Don’t use anything except either AdGuard or uBlock Origin. Main reason for this is because “Adblock” and many other blocking apps send tracking history or insert their own “acceptable ads” and that’s the reason they exist. We’ve also seen cases of ad blocking extensions getting compromised (search up nano adblocker as an example).

Also remember. The reason for ads existing is to pay for bandwidth, servers, CDN’s etc. If there is a subscription to a site (YouTube as an example, and even here) then use it to support that site and the content creators on that site.

For these TV streaming sites these ads are pretty well fixed into the player. Blocking the ads essentially means no content. They’ve done a good job with this.

As above. If people watching TV programs blocked ads the free streaming wouldn't last long.

Its their own fault though - being constantly spied on for your interests, adding video (as in moving) adverts and jumpy flashy ads, more and more of the damn things...

I just don’t watch. The adds in TVNZ on demand are to frequent for me and can’t be fast forwarded so even though they have content interested in I just don’t watch it.

When/if they bring out a add free subscription will look at it. Pay for YouTube premium as it’s a music service as well and allows downloads for when out and about, meaning I can be on a $16 mobile data plan.

I don't like the ads either, but find they are a lot shorter than the broadcast version and have a countdown timer. I wish they could be recorded though. I think I asked about that here and got an answer. I should probably dig it up...

I signed up for the $12.99 YouTube premium a few years ago. Was under impression price going up, but if joined before increase that price was grandfathered. Still paying it now to my surprise.
Pretty sure it’s higher price today though. Also I had to sign up on windows computer, if tried on iPhone it was about $3 more.
