I have a friend (of a friend) who is a British citizen, but has currently returned to NZ, that wants to watch BBC TV here. She used to be able to do this using a VPN (I don't know which one), but currently she finds it no longer works. Maybe BBC has blocked access to that VPN.

Does anyone know how she can watch BBC live TV here in NZ, that is currently working well? I have suggested the filmon website paid subscription, but there may be alternative methods that I dont know. Maybe a working VPN someone knows?

As she is a British citizen, she should be able to supply any sign up information that may be required, such as UK address, UK passport number, social security number etc.

I will direct her to this thread and she can read any suggestions or comments directly. I wont be able to answer any questions as I am not in direct contact with her.

Thanks in advance.

Hiamie:

As she is a British citizen, she should be able to supply any sign up information that may be required, such as UK address, UK passport number, social security number etc.

None of this will overcome the fact she's not in the UK at present. She will still need to use something to get around geo-blocking. Just be careful - some VPNs are just scam.

Entitlement to the BBC is not based on citizenship, it is based on paying the license fee and being in the UK...

iPlayer will not function legally outside the UK, as the BBC have sold the international rights to its programmes to other broadcasters/streamers

A lot of content is restricted by your physical location in the world, not whether or not you are a citizen of the nation in question.

What's the content she's missing? The landscape is a lot different now than even a few years ago. Lots of things that screen overseas will be available here day and date, depending on your services of choice (e.g Sky / Netflix / Disney+, etc). Even FTA TV has day and date releases in many cases.

If it's current events stuff that will only screen locally in the UK then VPN is the answer, but it's a game of cat and mouse as she will know from her current broken VPN - and it is a security black hole for those less tech savvy.

Can anyone suggest a VPN provider that is working for BBC?

We can talk about the technology publicly but not how to circumvent the restrictions.

Find a friend in the UK to host a VPN.

I can login using Getflix VPN. Your friend (of a friend) may have been unlucky with their VPN. If its of interest I recently received promo codes for 70% lifetime discount - $1.49/month billied biannually. Not sure whether or not I should post it here. PM me if you're interested.

You could try Proton VPN.

They have a free option and their security is probably as good as any.

You will have to configure it though. There are technical instructions.

Just use a DNS redirect service. There is one often discussed on here that works fine.

Windscribe works pretty well.   I mainly use it for Amazon streaming (which I have a UK subscription as I have all my photos stored there).  It however does work with Netflix and Iplayer.

I would recommend getting a separate modem, just for the VPN. Makes a big difference.

@Hiamie Did you get this sorted?

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

I've been using smart dns proxy for many years and catch all my favourite BBC shows via that service. No VPN required and it streams smoothly in full HD.

Thanks to everyone that responded. I am not personally involved in doing this, so I cant provide feedback regarding success or not. I have passed on all feedback both public and private, so now its up to my friends friend, as to whether she pursues any of your kind advice. Thank you all once again.
