We have Gb fibre, and everything on the TVNZ on demand site works well.

HOWEVER, the "live" (ie when we try to watch the news) experience is glitchy, has buffering issues, and is just generally rubbish.

We are running all this through an ATV4 and have no issues with any other streaming service.

Anyone else having this issue ?

Nope. Its the only way we watch the news. Watching it via Xbox One on BigPipe.

Same, it's the only way we watch, also via xbox one but on 2degrees - it's always fine other than a couple of seconds of low res before seems to bump up to HD.

Nope. Tested TVNZ app on ATV4 viewing TVNZ1 live stream and no fault found.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

TV3 COVID broadcast has a great picture and no issues.

TV1 was poor quality with heaps of buffering issues.

TV1 streaming programs are all fine, it is only just the "Live" we have issues with.

I am in Palmy, Gb Fibre.

How is the ATV4 conneted to the network, wired or wireless, what DNS settings are in use, and to add, we use TVNZ live quite a lot, never an issue and that was when we were with Spark fibre, and now Sky.

Both, one wired and one wireless, both have issues.

I do run my own caching DNS server here (when we had all the kids here we had over 100 devices in the house at one stage, so DHCP and DNS made my life much easier).

I would have thought DNS issues would have shown on the TVNZ streaming , not just the live programming.

You should be using ISP DNS as first part of basic fault checking

I run multiple servers at home for media, print, file sharing, automated backup, FTP and working on getting a web server up and running.

I will look at manually configuring one device to see how we go.

Hi, its just one thing I would rule out, ensure the ATV's at least are using the ISPs DNS, that way you are assured they are feeding from the correct on net CDN.

As mentioned on other threads, Live TV is harder to stream compared to recorded material, the encoders have no ready access to non real time coding techniques, which can result in streams that are slightly higher in bandwidth, but more importantly less tolerant to packet loss and jitter and very likely have less buffer padding.

There are lots of things within your network that can impact it, if the device is on Wireless it could be impacted from other devices contending for bandwidth, WiFi is not good when it comes to providing multi user throughput in a busy environment.

If your DNS is not providing you with a connection to a local on net Spark CDN cache then its possible you are getting it from God knows where. Again all these minor things might not matter with recorded material, but can be important with Live Streams.

MANY people use 3rd party DNS now for malware, advertising, porn, etc blocking, privacy, etc. IMHO anything that requires ISP DNS in this day and age should be considered inherently flawed.

What about CDNs that ISPs plug into?

I’ve never had an issue with ATV 4K. Apart from being a 720p 25fps stream, no buffering or stutters.
