After setting up NextPVR, I have been browsing the EPG data.

It has been really eye opening to see how much of what overseas content we are offered by free to air television is so old and out of date.

Many of the series are of the before 2008 vintage, over 14 year old.

So what, a lot of Australian day time content is 1960s, e.g., Bewitched, and even Skippy (the bush kangaroo).

I think that's because no one under the age of 65 watches over the air FTA TV, so to them it's new and fresh content :-P

Interesting, just received a press release from TVNZ about programs coming in 2023:

“TVNZ’s international line-up is full of breadth and depth. We’re committed to giving audiences access to premium international productions, and importantly making that access free. Our partnerships with NBCUniversal, Paramount and Sony deliver us must-watch US content and our ongoing deals with Banijay, ITV and BBC ensure we have the best of British and Australian content on our screens too,” says Slater

Star-studded US titles for 2023 include Sly Stallone vehicle, Tulsa King, Kiefer Sutherland in spy-drama Rabbit Hole, Pete Davidson’s semi-autobiographical, Bupkis and Marcia Gay Harden in So Help Me Todd. Action-packed Fire Country will turn up the heat, and the Aotearoa-filmed adaptation of One of Us Is Lying will delight fans of the bestselling book. Alongside the American roster, the best of British will also feature. From the BBC there’s Rogue Heroes, dramatising the formation of the SAS, Keely Hawes is back in Crossfire, Bradley Walsh will host everybody’s new gameshow obsession, Blankety Blank and David Attenborough will present the highly anticipated Frozen Planet II. From ITV comes Ioan Gruffudd in The Reunion, David Tennent in Litvinenko and coming of age drama Tell Me Everything. Closer to home, premium Australian titles round out the international slate. Mini-series Bali 2002 recounts the devastating Kuta terrorist attacks and factual series, Code 1: Minute by Minute, gives viewers a first-hand look at how our trans-Tasman neighbours cope when traumatic events occur in their own backyard.

Before streaming availability in NZ FTA was so much worse. Even Coronation St was several years out of date. Imo FTA in NZ is the best it's ever been for new shows. The steaming competition has really pushed FTA along.

Not that I watch FTA often. The ads drive me nuts.

Inability to watch Dr Who without ads means I'm missing Dr Who and other things. A subscription option would be great even if it covered only some local and some intl content I'd seriously look at that to restore my local viewing and enjoyment.

Blankety Blank with Bradley Walsh, cripes he is a busy man.

You'll find out takes and the 2021 Christmas special on Youtube.

All the usual British comedians and personalities guest appear.

This looks like its going to be another good game show. Of course having a consummate compère like Bradley Walsh helps. Unlike the just finished "Ant & Dec's Limitless Win", which we found quite slow and repetitive.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

For FTA, to avoid the ads you need to record the programmes and then play them back using software that allows you to easily skip the ads.  Any device or software that is officially approved by Freeview will not be able to skip the ads easily as they make that a requirement of using the Freeview name.  I use MythTV on Linux which makes it easy to skip ads, and I understand that NextPVR on Windows also works well.  There are lots of other choices available.  I have not actually watched an FTA ad in years.  When I had to sit in the hospital ED for hours a few months ago, the ads on their TV were all completely unknown to me.

There's actually quite a lot of good content coming out on TVNZ at the moment. We've been streaming from their ondemand service a lot more recently.

ThreeNow has too much reality tv crap on it these days.

I record FTA just so I can skip the ads. The ads on 3now and tvnz+ drive me nuts. I pay for youtube premium because the ads drive me nuts 😬
