Hi,

I want to be able to turn the international news (BBC, etc) on for my dad via an app on appletv and it play continuously. Is there any way to do this via a subscription app? ideally without having to use a VPN.

thanks in advance

BBC, CNN, Fox, NBC, etc

Plex has all that? So far, I've used it to watch ancient movies.

For free news Apps that he can just turn on and let play all day on Apple TV are Al Jazeera English, France 24 English and GB News which is British and similar to BBC.

Also consider adding the You Tube app to Apple and set it up for him by subscribing it to BBC, CNN etc and all the other news he likes. Once he starts watching one channel he will be fed similar. Depending on his abilities as long as you don’t overload him with instructions to begin with and he gets frustrated and shuts off because it’s too confusing.

IMHO For an older non tech person Apple TV is more difficult to use especially if the remote is the older one that you have to slide fingers across it to scroll and it skips all over the place. I have both Android and Apple and far prefer the Android because of the variety of apps and ease of use.

Specifically the Dish TV Box or dongle which gives live NZ freeview TV and YouTube at the press of a clearly labelled button. The remote is very easy to use with a back button plus apps or home button that take you back to the main menu. For an older person it’s really easy and I have set this up for a number of oldies and they find it very simple to use. So do consider spending $100 for a simpler experience where you won’t keep getting called to fix it and the choice of Apps is much wider. There is an Android App called TV News which has hundreds of channels including NASA that he may enjoy. Also the ones above are available on Android TV.

There’s also the option of adding a radio app and make some favourite channels like BBC etc for him to listen to rather than watch.

Yeah - not sure how the BBC would appreciate being compared to GB News - maybe a better comparison would be Fox?!

there is no legal way to watch these in NZ without a sky subscription.

That is not exactly correct. A stream or channel can be perfectly legal if it is legally available. For instance official BBC content on YouTube. It is up to Sky and BBC to police the terms of their license agreement, not anyone else.

GB News

Not unless you potentially want to increase the chances of digging your dad out of a conspiracy rabbithole from time to time. I'm not a regular watcher of Fox, but my impression is GB has significantly wackier content now and then.

Since we weren’t told the gentleman’s political persuasion the question is answered without bias and solely to provide legal live channels. I’m sure he is of an age to know his own mind about the content he watches and which to follow. The fact that he asks for News channels rather than Reality ones suggests he is discerning.

Sky has pushed this line in the past in regard to geo-unblocking. It is not true. Anything that is not pirated can be legally viewed here. With IPTV streaming I watch CNN and the BBC channels all the time. It is not difficult to set up. You just need software like Tivimate and a DNS proxy. I would be happy to provide details on the unblocking forum if desired.

Recent NZ Case law disagrees with you ,

its just that its not worth while pursuing individual cases,  ( but when something like "Mybox" turns up, it becomes a big enough target)

"Associate Judge Smith accepted Sky’s argument, saying that there could be no doubt that at least some of the streams advertised as being available on My Box would be original copyright works, communicated without the owner’s consent.

In doing so, he relied on the converging findings of the CJEU in Stichting Brein v Wullems and the English High Court in Football Association Premier League Ltd v British Communications Plc,[35] namely that “communication” of a copyright work involves the concept of making the work available when it otherwise would not have been.

Here, My Box deliberately, with full knowledge of the consequences of its actions, provided its users access to protected copyright works which they would not otherwise be able to readily access.[36] Its actions accordingly “must have constituted copyright infringement, actionable at the suit of relevant copyright owners or exclusive licensees”.[37]

I only watch BBC for free and would feel like a criminal using tivimate.
