I have just purchased and setup an Amazon Fire stick 4k Max for my parents. (Mid 70s)

I have side loaded Freeview, but we can’t get the Captions working on the Freeview App, or the TVNZ app - they watch The Chase regularly, but both have hearing difficulties.

captions are turned on in the Amazon Fire stick settings

any ideas to get it working within these apps?

On TVNZ you will see an icon on top right if captions are available. Once you turn on these will be for all content where captions are available.

For the Freeview app you will have to look around. I can check when back home.

Can confirm - the Freeview app has a menu to 'enable' subtitles - but it doesnt work.

As mentioned above, you could go into the TVNZ app and stream TV1 and enable captions via that I think.

Isn't the freeview app available in the app store? Or is that because it is a Fire TV and doesn't use the Google play store? Coudl it be an old version?

The Freeview app is not available on Fire TV Stick. It is at the moment exclusive on Panasonic Fire TV models though.

It can be sideloaded on recent sticks, but it won't work on many older models due to ABI issues.

Correct. It can be sideloaded, but not available from the Amazon app store.

Maybe off on a tangent, but are you watching live TV when you're testing the captions?

In my experience, if I use the TV itself (Freeview), the captions work.

Using TVNZ+ app - no captions if live. Programmes uploaded after they've broadcast then have captions (some, not all).

Correct. Most programmes on TVNZ+ will have captions. Just turn captions on while watching an episode, which will be on for every programme with captions available from that moment. If there's no caption icon on top right then the program doesn't have it.
