Since a recent update (not sure when), shows on TVNZ+ have subtitles enabled by default, and I have to switch them off every time. I haven't found anywhere to switch the default off. Anyone else seeing this?

I'm using an Apple TV 4K with the latest 26.4 update.

Found this online. Hope it works for you.

Nearly 60% of the content available on TVNZ+ is captioned. To see whether a specific programme or movie carries captions, simply select a title and go through to the relevant show page. Once you're on the show page look for a 'CC' symbol next to the episode or movie you want to play. Once you hit play, you can turn captions on and off within the video player by selecting the 'CC' symbol in the bottom right corner.

If you can't see a 'CC' symbol on the show page, and there is no option to turn captions on and off in the accompanying video player, unfortunately this piece of content does not carry captions yet. We're working with our accessibility provider, Able and our international distributors to grow captioning on our streaming platform as quickly as possible. If there's a programme you're keen to see added to the service, hit the contact us button and let us know! You can also drop our friends at Able a line here - hello@able.co.nz.

Thanks, I know how to switch them on and off per program, but the problem is that every program starts with them on when it used to default to off.

We have the same problem and I raised it here months ago. Have never found a permanent solution - very annoying. Turning off subtitles in Apple TV settings has no effect on TVNZ+.

“Nearly 60% of the content available on TVNZ+ is captioned …..”

Can you put more context around this quote - who is being quoted - TVNZ or a third party?

It was an AI response to my web search. Not always 100% correct.

This is the thread where I raised this here last year. At first I thought it was a good thing but then it became a PITA. At the time, in response to my ticket, TVNZ acknowledged that they had a technical issue surrounding this and said they had fixed it. Then the fix became undone and we’re back to where we were.

Have given up on it and now just have to turn off subtitles within the app each time we fire up TVNZ+. Still a PITA.

So why post it here as fact then?

I would rather not have AI paraphrases and hallucinations unless it can be verified, please.

This started happening to me yesterday also. I remember the original thread from @eracode but could never replicate it on my set-up until yesterday.

Somehow, not suffering alone makes me feel somewhat better about the situation. Hopefully, they fix it in a future update.

I wonder if this is related to changes on how login works on TVNZ+ now.

Hadn't noticed any changes - what/when were they?

My suspicion is that when Apple releases an update to tvOS it breaks something in the TVNZ+ app - and possibly other apps. One that I shouldn't mention has the same issue.

Please please please say something is AI when posting it. That way we can assess its likely accuracy (i.e it isn't!).
