Short of Quickflix putting a CDN node here in NZ, there would be significant cost involved in shifting that volume of traffic from Australaia to NZ. I guess there might also be rights holding issues potentially as well?
Be nice if someone gave Sky a kick in it's ever expanding behind, content-wise...

I also really don't see what the issue is with putting a CDN in a TCL data center either. Perhaps I am missing something?

It seems to me, that if you have 10,000 TCL customers using Quickflix then they're going to be using CDN capacity some where.

I do get the whole scale answer to a point...

1 CDN node - 1000 customers, 20% spare - allows - 1200 customers
1 CDN node - 1000 customers, 20% spare - allows - 1200 customers
1 CDN node - 1000 customers, 20% spare - allows - 1200 customers
1 CDN node - 1000 customers, 20% spare - allows - 1200 customers
1 CDN node - 1000 customers, 20% spare - allows - 1200 customers

Do this 5 times and you've got a whole node of head room...

Where as if you build one bigger node in Australia with scale then you can potentially bring down the percentage of head room required to ensure the same QoS.

You also have less boxes to have to manage, a bigger faster box uses less power than 2 smaller slower ones, all the obvious stuff kicks in....

But I came back to 'how are the other ISPs doing this'?

I do get the obvious answers... because they're smaller, the amount of volume they're bringing to the table means they can pick up the capacity from the existing .au head room without having much impact until their customer base actually grows enough to add more CDN capacity which could then be dropped in .nz.

Where as with Telstra, there's a better than even chance that on announcement, Telstra will bring more customers to the table all in one hit than the spare headroom in Australia and this will mean that a CDN node is needed here from day one.

I also get the conflict of interest with Tbox, which was/is targeted to deliver rich content, but so far has been such a fail that it must be really frustrating the TCL guys who had plans queued up behind it.

I'm considering Telstra at the moment as a switch from Orcon. I'd like to see them adopting services like this.

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat New Zealand as a Solution Architect for all things Linux, Virtual and of course Cloud. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.

As a content provider themselves I cant see TCL doing this but you never know.

Yeah the no iSky sucks the big one more than Quickflix. I pay for the Sky already. Both would be nice but as mentioned not holding my breath.

yeah, one would think that support fornet neutrality would be strong here, but seems tonot be the case.

I don't see the fuss over unmetering from people on this forum tbh- most self repsecting geeks will be on at least a 60GB plan, whihc provides plenty of room for quickflix.

Personally I am on a 100GB plan which mostly goes on torrenting. However since QF launched I have watched much more streaming, and done a whole lot less torrenting, so my overall usage remains about the same.

Or, to look at it another way, if you can ditch multiroom and/or sky movies for quickflix then that frees up $25+ to spend on data upgrades, which on most prividers will get you at least 20GB - which translates to over 20 hours of movies a month, or around 5 movies per week.
