@rikkitic a couple more options if you're not already sorted.

Student Volunteer Army have set up an online store where they deliver essentials to those who can't get them personally https://sva.org.nz/

Civil Defence are delivering essential supplies for those who can't access personally https://www.civildefence.govt.nz/resources/news-and-events/news/cdem-group-0800-numbers-for-supporting-communities/

I am sick of seeing all the doom and gloom predictions of never were economists that our economy and employment is heading down the drain. New Zealanders know that and don't need reminding daily by irresponsible click bait headlines by unprofessional media.

In times like this people need hope or we are going to have a major mental health problem. Of course the press will never accept any level of responsibility for it.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I'm afraid you won't be hearing good news for a while I expect. Bad news sells newspapers. I can only recommend, what I have been recommending my clients tell their own staff, that at least during work hours, they stay off social media and as much as possible avoid unofficial sites for information.

New media like all for profit entities they kid themselves and their customers that they are providing a service to make themselves feel better. They are providing/selling a product. The only service they are providing is a dividend to their shareholders.

I don't think the media are kidding themselves. I think they are well aware they are selling a product, going back a long time.

Despite all the doom and gloom, once the lockdown is over, people are ITCHING to get back to work. Some won't be able to, but with modern methods, people will be able to pick up work adhoc and retool more easily, so I think there are some positives too.

Rikkitic: Nope. Not allowed at my age. If police stopped me on the way I would get a stern talking-to

This is one of my worst fears, that people over 70 will believe it is not allowed, to go out. We will have people dying needlessly postponing essential and available medication, and simple nutrition issues.

Edit: Yes, it's a bad idea to go out. Yes, all other alternatives and support networks should be explored first. If people over 70 with no other source of information or contact are only getting a message to stay in and believe they are not allowed to go out - then this is a very bad thing and will result in deaths.

There is a difference between "strongly advised not to" and "not allowed". I can't find any prohibition on the government covid 19 website. The wording is "Additional measures that you and your whānau and friends can take include:

Stay at home, and ask others to pick up supplies for you." My bolding of can. This is one of several areas on the website where the message does not match the importance given by task force spokes people. As an example the police are concerned at the number of people going to beaches. The newspaper covid 19 message is exercise only in your own suburb. That wording isn't on the website. If you have to travel any distance to a supermarket you must use the closest, again that isn't on the website. It should be easy to keep the website updated to reflect any refinements to the rules.

@networkn If only that were true. After working in social services through several recessions my experience tells me that this crisis will take a long time to recover from. Every month of close down will add many months on recovery. It is likely to take years not months to turn this around.

Dammit now I am doing what I hate. It's the last doom and gloom I will do.

One thing that the morning show on three has started is a "good news" section.

It's all the cool and quirky stuff around the world that makes you smile (or at the very least, not think about the negative stuff for a minute or two)

Stuff like wild goats roaming the streets of Wales, funny home videos of people passing the time etc.

Not all doom and gloom...just mostly.

I remember seeing a cartoon once, the caption was "Tired of success? Join the Met Service"

Economists are basically forecasters of the economy. Their success rate is probably worse than the Met Service. Therefore take what they say with a pinch of salt.

So far as the recovery goes, human beings are extremely resilient and resourceful. I watched a video the other day about the oil well fires in Kuwait after Saddam was pushed back out of Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm. As Saddam's forces retreated they set fire to nearly 700 oil wells sparking a environmental disaster.

Initially it was though it could take 5 to 10 years to put the fires out. All fires were out in just 9 months. A tremendous tribute to how humans respond to catastrophes.

For those interested here's a link to the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mW2QwOle-O4&feature=youtu.be

I could tell you a story about goat hunting in Scotland, but this might not be the place! 😇

I've heard countdown is allowing click and collect only for 65+, and for anyone with health conditions.

A relative visited Pak and Save today and found 65+ are allowed in immediately with no queue, so that's good.

I really hope that any vulnerable over 70's are getting the right message.

They are. I tried to register given that I have several relevant health conditions but have not heard back at all so perhaps they do not consider them relevant.

The message I'm getting is that I can't get anything regardless. I have priority but the delivery slots are permanently full. It doesn't seem to make any difference at all.
