I'm now 7 weeks post prostatectomy after a finding of grade (ISUP) 3 cancer (was Gleason 4+3).  Looks like the margins and lymph were clear, so that's positive - just awaiting first follow-up PSA in 6 weeks or so.

As noted above in some comments, it's important for you and your medical professionals consider a number of factors, of which PSA is one.  My father died of (not with) prostate cancer which metastasised to his liver so I have been doing PSA for a number of years.  My latest one last year prompted the doc to review my history which showed a steady doubling every 3.8 years over the last few years.  Note that is wasn't wildly over the limit (of 4.0 in my situation), but the increase and family history meant that he was concerned enough that I was off the the urologist.  Scan (MRI) late last year showed likely cancer and follow-up biopsy confirmed.

With regards to the DRE, your doctor should let you know that it really only checks for abnormalities posteriorly.  It is worth noting that mine (two lesions, one bigger than the other - the main one came out at 2.3cm in the histopathology report post removal) were both in the anterior part of the prostate (apparently not quite so common).  I only mention this for information purposes from my personal experience.

All the above is simply to reinforce what others have said - keep checking and talking to your doctor about the results ... and remember that there is not necessarily a definitive answer as to whether you should be being sent to a urologist or not - just keep asking the questions of your medical professionals to try and make sure.

Sorry if you find that 'TMI'  - many many seem unaware of the fact and it can explain the levels moving around a bit......

Haha no sorry I meant TMI on my part for saying it's an issue.

OK - I misunderstood 😃

Thought it was odd that someone participating in this thread would be squeamish about the associated issues.

Reanalyse: I was quite supprised to find that PSA tests are no longer recommended for those of us in mid 70s, theory being you will probably die from other causes before a slow growing prostrate cancer. Still my doctor did allow a PSA test, which I will shortly have, on my request

I believe that approach is in practice mostly based on average life expectancy 80 years. For example if the average life expectancy is 100 then testing is not recommended beyond 95 years old. You can bet American presidents continue to get the test and the best advice and treatment available at any age without regard to any average ; ).

At 70, I asked my doctor for a PSA test when I noticed it wasn't on my regular work up. I had had a PSA test every five years from 55.

The doctor said "OK but this will be the last", and when I asked why he said - as @Reanalyse said - that if I didn't have noticeable signs of prostate cancer at 70, it would almost certainly be something else that killed me. Hmmm

When I entered the workforce, you retired at sixty and getting to seventy was regarded as quite satisfactory. Getting to seventy-five was considered an extremely good innings. Now Pakeha men get on average to eighty-one or -two, and women still four or five years more.
Not so much if you're of Maori or Pasifika heritage, of course ☹

Thanks for the kind thoughts.  On the bright side, I'm 70 shortly and I know they won't be stopping my PSA tests just yet!!😀
