Batman:

airlines threatening to quit NZ apparently

Look at the group who is making the claim in the article, so not exactly an impartial opinion, not that I read past the first paragraph due to the paywall. Guessing they don't realise that there is a pandemic sweeping the world, and tourism and travel all over the world is bock bottom.  It was also the cause of why it was able to spread so quickly and all around the world. Things won't get back to normal, until the vaccine is rolled out, so they can just wait.

Likewise, have can't read the full article due to the payway. and BARNZ obviously doesn't deem it important enough to have a press release on it's website.

I think all airlines will be in some kind of cost minimizing hibernation mode (of freight focused mode) until the pandemic is over. The airlines routes that can't be justified in this environment (i.e. Auckland to Manila direct) arn't currently running.

Some airlines will fail during this period, and others will be under financial pressure, and will retreat to their core and most profitable routes. But most airlines are own or lease planes that they can't ditch in the current environment, so can't really downsize. There are also other airlines with access to good finance which will be keen to lap up market share in what is likely to be a profitable couple of years post pandemic. There will be a lot of pent up demand for travel, and the world is awash with cheap oil at the moment. Quite a good environment for airlines.

Realistically there is not too much NZ can do about this. Without just letting covid-19 into NZ, we can't handle a high volume of travel that the airlines want. And the only opening up we are likely to be doing (pacific / aussie bubbles) are on routes that arn't in danger of being lost anyway.

I don't think NZ is going to lean over backwards, and put our populations health at risk in order to save air routes likely run by foreign airlines, crews, maintenance teams etc. If the route is that profitable or valuable to NZ, we can have our flag carrier run it.

Kinda a bit dark about airlines handling of the pandemic. Given that the first SAR's was proven to be spread on a plane, continued pointing out that Covid-19 hadn't been proven to in the eairly days wasn't very helpfull. Same deal with talking up their hospital grade filtration. Hospitals have that too, and we sure know that covid-19 has spread in hospitals. And Air-NZ scheduling A320 crew to work on domestic flights shortly after returning from overseas put the country at un-needed risk.

Likewise paywalled. But I read as far as the word "permanently" and snorted. As soon as it's profitable, they will be back. I expect that they're after some kind of government subsidy/guarantee that they will make a profit. Personally, I couldn't care less if all international flights to NZ were done by Air NZ for the next 6-12 months. I expect it would probably help Air NZ make a profit and allow them to schedule their flights better.

"US logs a record 3,157 coronavirus deaths in one day"

The US recorded its highest daily number of coronavirus deaths on Wednesday, as the number of people admitted to hospital with Covid exceeded 100,000 for the first time since the pandemic began.

According to the Johns Hopkins University tracker, 3,157 new deaths were recorded on Wednesday, more than the number of people killed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The previous high was the 2,607 deaths recorded on 15 April, at the beginning of the pandemic.

There were 200,070 new cases on Wednesday, only the second time that new cases had exceeded 200,000. With the total caseload now standing at 13,911,728, the US is expected to record its 14-millionth case on Thursday, and experts predict the death toll could reach nearly 450,000 by the end of February.

The deaths, cases and hospitalizations showed a country slipping deeper into crisis, with perhaps the worst yet to come, in part because of the delayed effects from Thanksgiving last week, when millions of Americans disregarded warnings to stay home and celebrate only with members of their household.

Across the US, the surge has swamped hospitals and left nurses and other healthcare workers shorthanded and burned out.

Santa should get vaccinated with the highest priority at all! ;-)

I'm waiting for the government to put out a special directive that Santa doesn't have to spend 14 days in MIQ...

Just wait I'm sure there will be one eventually

And true to form here it is

"The Prime Minister has given Santa Claus a border exemption so he can visit Aotearoa to deliver presents this Christmas.
In effect, this means New Zealand's first travel bubble will be with the North Pole.

Jacinda Ardern confirmed Santa won't need to isolate for 14 days upon arrival and can freely come into the country.
"After much consideration, the Ministry of Health has determined the North Pole is clear of Covid, as far as we know," she told the Herald.

New Zealand benefits from being the second country Santa visits because of the international dateline, so there's little chance of him contracting Covid-19 before arriving here.

"He has full clearance. We're all good," Ardern said.

California 10 News: Los Angeles County Supervisor seen dining outdoors hours after voting for ban

Los Angeles County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl was spotted dining outdoors at a restaurant hours after voting to uphold a ban on outdoor dining due to a surge in COVID-19 cases, it was reported Monday.

...During the board meeting, Kuehl called outdoor dining "a most dangerous situation ... This is a serious health emergency and we must take it seriously ... The servers are not protected from us, and they're not protected from their other tables that they're serving at that particular time, plus all the hours in which they're working."

The county Department of Public Health announced Nov. 22 that in- person dining would be halted at 10 p.m. Wednesday and continuing for three weeks....

California is highly likely to go back into Lockdown in the coming weeks

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A staggering rise in coronavirus cases could overwhelm California’s health system within weeks and “drastic” action such as a widespread stay-at-home order may be needed to combat the threat, Gov. Gavin Newsom warned.
