Its a long read, so many things piled on each other to slow Europe response.

Italy's call for urgent help was ignored as coronavirus swept through Europe
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/jul/15/revealed-the-inside-story-of-europes-divided-coronavirus-response

""
It was a moment of chilling clarity. On 26 February, with the numbers of Italians known to be infected by coronavirus tripling every 48 hours, the country’s prime minister, Giuseppe Conte, appealed to fellow EU member states for help.

But what happened next came as a shock. The distress call was met with silence.
""
The stark reality was that in the months and years before coronavirus arrived in Europe, stocks of personal protective equipment (PPE) had dwindled. Emergency supplies of masks had expired, been destroyed and never replaced. Pandemic preparedness plans were out of date.

“Several European countries had a strategic stock of masks that were outdated … Most of them were just destroyed,” said one scientific adviser.

Politico: White House coronavirus response coordinator Deborah Birx frustrated by 'parroting back' of virus misinformation

In an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press," Birx said she's heard members of local communities "parroting back" misinformation about the effectiveness of masks and called for stronger mitigation efforts.

"When I go out, I just don't meet with health care providers and governors and mayors, but I also meet with the community," Birx said. "And so I hear community members parroting back those situations, parroting back that masks don't work, parroting back that we should work toward herd immunity, parroting back that gatherings don't result in superspreading events. And I think our job is to constantly say those are myths."

"And right now, across the Sun Belt, we have governors and mayors who have cases equivalent to what they had in the summertime, yet aren't putting in the same policies and mitigations that they put in the summer, that they know changed the course of this pandemic across the South," she added. "So it is frustrating, because not only do we know what works, governors and mayors used those tools to stem the tide in the spring and the summer."

Public health officials have stepped up their warnings as coronavirus cases hit record levels. A million new cases were diagnosed in the United States in the first five days of December.

Host Chuck Todd pressed Birx on ... officials contradicting public health warnings... She expressed frustration with false claims about the virus and echoed concerns about the severity of its spread, noting that cases are increasing in every state except for Hawaii....

Mind you, like here they are still struggling to make quarantine arrangements watertight.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-12-07/simon-birmingham-tells-nsw-police-to-tighten-airport-quarantine/12956196

On Saturday, a 53-year-old woman and her 15-year-old son from were initially directed to board a bus to hotel quarantine after being screened by NSW Health.

Authorities said a miscommunication led to police escorting the pair to a Melbourne-bound domestic flight.

Fortunately intercepted at Melbourne Airport and placed in quarantine there - and so far have tested negative.

Oh yes, correct.  I had forgotten that one.  For some it reason does not show as local here https://covidlive.com.au/australia (but does on the same sites 'NSW' page).

That case was a bit disconcerting given the person also worked at another hotel (that did not appear to be a quarantine one!).  Cannot get my head around the fact that these people are not precluded from other employment and paid accordingly.

Fortunately they appear to have dodged the bullet on this one ... so far.

4 times - Sunday as well

https://www.health.govt.nz/news-media/media-releases/1-new-case-covid-19-managed-isolation-5

At this stage of New Zealand’s response to COVID-19, we are seeing cases routinely appear at the border in recent returnees in managed isolation facilities.

We expect this to continue to be the case while we remain in Alert Level 1 with managed isolation requirements in place.

To reflect this, the Ministry is reducing the frequency of media updates to four times a week – currently scheduled to be on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. The Ministry's website will be updated with case numbers in line with these media updates.

On those days, the Ministry will report cases that have tested positive in managed isolation in the preceding days since the last update.

The public can be assured that the Ministry will report any significant development, including any case emerging in the community, sooner if required. The new arrangement will begin as of Wednesday.

Not sure if these stats were previously available, but this page https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/diseases-and-conditions/covid-19-novel-coronavirus/covid-19-data-and-statistics/testing-covid-19 shows where testing in NZ is now occurring, and how many are at the border vs inside NZs borders and not linked to overseas travel. Sort of predictable figures.

But our testing numbers have certainly dropped back a lot again. We are a bit of a sitter for another undetected local transmission cases due to this lack of testing. Mixed with the lack of people scanning and recording, it could cause problems tracing people. I think people are now extra complacent because they know there is a vaccine around the corner. We have been lucky so far, but friends in the UK are having a hell of a time, and it is killing a lot of people. Guessing scanning will come mandatory once we get another breakout, and they realize that they can't do adequate tracing, due to noone scanning. Hope the MOH don't blame people again for not scanning like they did last time. They should blame the government for not making it mandatory, like they have with mask wearing on Auckland public transport. This virus is going to be with us potentially for years, even with a vaccine, it just may not be as much of a killer.

Taiwan takes breaking quarantine seriously, even if only for 8 seconds.

Rikkitic:

Is this the next one?

unless it's presymptomatic human to human transmission then no, if it is, then yes

for these developing countries you have to look at what industry is there and what kind of waste is being discharged, usually the answer is right there
